so i'm going to take liberties with the personal experience forum on this one. last night (friday the 25th) i attended the Los Angeles premier of Don Coscarelli's "John Dies at the End"...although i wasn't so sure John does die, i guess he did, I’ll have to read the book to make sure....i can certainly say i enjoyed the movie even if the narrative was "out there". At any rate the day before, i saw don and asked him about his upcoming appearances at the premiers. I knew about the movie and his showing it at sundance last year but what i didn't know until just a few days before was that doug jones was in it...unfortunately as i found out at the showing all to briefly. whether it was because the book dictated it or it was in the editing i don't know, at the introduction before the movie don had said they had to leave some good scenes on the cutting room floor…When i brought this up to him a couple of days before, he told me that Doug was working on a tv/movie in the northwest and may not be able to make it, which was a bit of a bummer even though i didn't know he was even in it at all until a few days ago.

in case you don't know, Doug played Abe Sapien in the hellboy movies and the pale man/faun in one of my favorite movies "Pan's Labryinth" and has more acting talent in his hands then most actors do in their whole body, and if you’ve seen his movies, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about, he’s like andy serkis stretched out a bit

At any rate, as the line was let in the theatre, I saw Don off to the side doing interviews and having his picture taken, I wanted to acknowledge him but held back a bit and shuffled up towards him as I knew he was working and there were there others that wanted to get their picture taken with him and such and I had relative easier access to him so I played it cool. HOWEVER then I saw a tall lanky man (with his back to me) standing next to don and I knew immediately who that was. It was then that I pushed myself through the crowd to greet Don and he, knowing how much I was interested in meeting doug, started to tell me that doug had managed to show up but I had already had my hand thrust out and I told Doug the same thing that I had mentioned to don earlier a couple of days before (The hands thing) he liked that and I also told him that I usually don’t fawn over actor types but I really did show up wanting to see him (and help Don’s box office). At the time I thought I was being clever but he didn’t get the joke I tried to make even though I leaned on the word “Fawn” and I had to end up explaining that as well and that explanation was clumsy at best…HE PLAYED THE FAUN IN PAN’S LABRINTH GUYS…I was not coming off that well, but he was really sweet about it and asked me my name and embraced me which I wasn’t expecting, and for the record, had any other guy done it I would have reacted much, much differently but he’s doug jones so I just hugged him back and then asked the guys if I could have my picture taken with them with the result above . That’s Don on the left and Doug on the right and me with the goofy grin in the middle. The guy who took our picture, while accommodating had bad timing as I was trying to get both doug and don who both are about 6’4’ stoop down a bit to my 5’8”. Also note, I had the decency to wear the promotional t-shirt to the movie which is what Don is pointing at

Hey that's pretty sweet - and I saw the movie 'John Dies at the End' just last week and I have to say I thought the movie was great. If I had been there I would have gone an introduced myself too. I just don't get scared of famous people - I was once on a paid duty minding a royal polo match in England. Princes Charles, Will and Harry were all there and when I saw Charles walking alone with his two police bodyguards I just almost ran over to him, stuck my hand out and said 'Hi' - know before anyone jumps on me - I am not a monarchist in the least and it's because I think they are just people like the rest of us, born into something they didn't chose, I tend to be against the monarchy but not the monarch. Anyway, he was actually pretty cool, he used some swear words in jest, which is not something they let themselves do in public, but he had also been in the navy and I think he was pretty relaxed. He literally stood and talked for about 3 mins, which is actually quite a lot, then at the urging of his annoyed bodyguards, off he trotted.

The point is I understand the reluctance to sometimes approach people who you know get approached by strangers far more than the rest of society, so you never really know if they are cool with people coming and talking and wanting photos etc. But if it's someone really famous, or someone you really admire, my attitude is that you have to go for it, especially as if you don't, you will probably regret if forever afterwards!

So Mulder, by the look of your face, I think you made the right decision!:)

actually i did excatly that to angus scrim who was also there, and as you know also had a brief role in john dies as a potty-mouthed priest. in real life he isn't so tall but he is a lot older now. pretty funny too, he rattled off a couple of good ad-libs at the brief q&a before the movie started...but i forgot what they were, it was something about the possibility of him appearing in another phantasm movie

No way Mulder! You should have mentioned that first! Phantasm is one of my all-time fav horror movies. I loved it when I first saw it about age 12. Flying silver spheres with blades, doors to weird other worlds with slaves, guitars on the porch. Wow what a film, and Angus Scrimm was in all of them. Well, that's what you get living in LA I suppose....
