Been listening to this show for about a year now, and I think that the hosts are doing an excellent job in keeping the conversation going on what is by it's very nature an almost impossible subject to get any definitive answers from. One of the recurring themes seems to be this idea that there is within the US Government a tiny group of people who somehow "know the truth about aliens" ( whatever that may mean...) My question is this: Is there a comparable situation elsewhere in Western Society wherein a small very closed group keeps control over a SECRET? one that they keep hidden generation after generation....and if so, how would the people at the top groom and recruit their replacements, assuming that the people at the top of the secret will get old and die just like the rest of us.....is such a thing even possible, that they could keep such a secret and keep it going?

My question is this: Is there a comparable situation elsewhere in Western Society wherein a small very closed group keeps control over a SECRET?

Yes, but it is a secret.

The Masons come to mind. I get as confused by the esoteric symbolism and rituals as anyone, but the basic idea behind 'progressing' in the Masonic Order is to memorize texts verbatim. When you can successfully memorize a given text, you are awarded an additional degree. I am not a Mason myself, but I have listened to Masons recite long swaths of text and I must say it is pretty amazing. It seems to me that if you wanted to further a "truth" whether it was an historical event or a philosophy of living, and you had no technology save language, that this would be the way to attempt to ensure the original text did not deviate over time.

I do not think this has been entirely successful. Christians within the Masonic Order have usurped some of the degrees and turned them into something different than they originally were. I also suspect some of the symbolism is now so obscure that the meanings have been effectively lost. Of course there have been a zillion books written on the subject and lots of conspiracy theories presented to 'explain' Masonic behavior. Although the official explanation is that the Masonic Order started in the 17th century in London, I'm much more inclined to believe it is an outgrowth of the Knights Templar, since so many of the rituals and stories are so similar.

The entire structure of conspiracy theory seems to require a dedicated and small core of individuals maintaining perfect control and coordination over time. When you think about it, this doesn't make much sense. Humanity is so very capable of screwing up anything, of resorting to tribal behavior so easily, that it is difficult to believe a disparate group of people could maintain secret control, perfectly coordinated and balanced, over any appreciable length of time at all.

During my work in the Air Force classified com center where my Ufo incident happened (see Don Ecker's Dark Matters Radio section) I was in access to --exotic-- --levels-- of Top Secret. Upon exiting that situation, I was given a copy (which I have to this day) of an AF Form that explains the security violation penalties. Which ranged from fines of $2000-to-$10,000, to life imprisonment, to the death penalty. While I was in that trouble, some Authorities decided that they wanted to remind me of the death penalty, -- penalty.
Well, I was thinking about the $2000 fine, and realized, that, all my used cars I ever owned, were purchased for around that amount. Then, a lightbulb appeared above my brain, and I suddenly felt a creative surge come over me, where I was formulating an idea that I call, the Death For Clunkers For Ufo Disclosure program. It would somehow involve me Disclosing, and recieving a new used car, for my trouble. Am not ready to submit this to the Whitehouse yet. Yet. ....

By-the-way, I noticed that ---MY--- story in Dark Matters, recieved over 1200 views, while all the other (non-'sticky) stories, recieved only under a few hundred.
Must be that my ---interview--- was rivetting. .......

I've come to hold the same contention, though I don't consider it a fact that I would personally defend. The few good historical pieces of information available seem to point in that direction. Of course, authors such as Laurence Gardner publishing book after book on the subject don't make the waters any clearer (Personal opinion of course). I would have to agree though; there is more forgotten than there is remembered of the Masonic tradition as well as its origins. Some would argue over the importance of that, but that dichotomy of opinion only serves to illustrate the point. The modern day manifestation of the Order seems relegated to a rewriting of its history every few years by the interpretations of many.

On the topic of the plausibility of decades long secrets being kept by an elite few, I can't say I really buy that. At least as far as politics and Government are concerned. In my view that would be the romanticized version of it, but on a serious level I would consider compartmentalization. That is to say, a secrecy more or less kept all on its own. Nevermind the 28 levels of clearance or whatever it's up to now, I'm more inclined to think that some things behind the curtain just aren't widely dispersed between organizations or branches of Government or military. I think you could reasonably hide a lot merely by doing that. Use the human body as a reference: Do your feet know what your thumbs are doing? Does your right eyebrow know your left eyebrow exists? But the brain does.

It happens all the time. Families keep secrets; I only just found out how dysfunctional my father's upbringing was (although I had my suspicions). Some women are notorious for not wanting to share their secret recipes. Catholic priests are prohibited from divulging the things told to them in confession.
