Hasn't there been an enormous increase in, albeit small, Humboldt - squids in the gulf of Mexico last year ? As far as I recall, they came up to dephts unusual for them and were quite aggressive toward divers.I still enjoy my Calamari Fritti, but it seems indeed odd.

Humboldts are extremely aggressive and dangerous. I've seen several shows on them in the past couple of years and was amazed at how vicious they are. One diver doing the photography had a special suit designed that was basically a Star Wars Imperial Stormtrooper's armor.

I think the majority of them are "smallish" being only 2-4 feet in overall length, but haven't they been found over 6feet long?

Yeah, they can become quite big indeed, I'm just wondering what drives them in more shallow waters except for their feeding habits .Their normal food source should be right at its 'normal place' still..
