It's not getting it ?!?!

Thing is 3 years old ! I've got a popular science magazine subscription on it, they've upgraded their app to make it compatible with iOS 6 and now can't read my old issues on it anymore... Arrrrrgh !

This is nuts... 3 years to obsolescence :(

Looks like I'm not the only one complaining :(

To say that I'm unhappy with Apple about the fact that I can't install iOS 6 on my iPad 1, is an understatement. It's not like the thing is seven or eight years old. I bought it just before the iPad 2 came out. And, now I'm angry. I'm very angry. I'm an Angry Bird who wants to have myself flung at the fortified pigs who made this very, very bad decision. You can install iOS 6 on the iPhone 3GS and on the iPhone 4, so why not the iPad 1?

I bought this damn thing as a platform for reading electronic media. If I have to upgrade the damn platform every three years because the damn iOS gets too heavy for the equipment, they can keep their damn trash. 15 million buyers are now stuck with a piece of equipment that will progressively become useless. $%!@#!@

Three year product cycle is way too short.
There should be a recall of all iPad 1 tablets to add the extra RAM needed to run iOS6.

Apple an earth frendly company ... LOL

You're not wrong. But hardware/software development is moving much faster than on the desktop platforms. Apple concluded the original iPad was a poor fit for iOS 6.

After only 3 years use they should at least offer a rebate for a new iPAD or maybe offer a hardware upgrade ... like boosting the 256MB RAM to iOS6 requirements... Damn !!

Apple? They are still giving their mobile gear far more useful life with OS upgrades than anyone else. There's no incentive, unfortunately.

Consider the plight of people who bought the first "non-beta" smartphone, the Nokia Lumia 900 a few weeks ago. It can't be upgraded, ever, to the next Windows Phone OS release. Apple is way ahead of the pack.

Yeah but..... they're going to frustrate... 15 million iPAD 1 users ? Not sure the Lumia did that well.

IMHO, the biggest fault is the initial sales pitch by Apple promoting the iPAD as a potential laptop replacement... and had we known that this version of the product had only a 3 year life-cycle, ecologists would have had a field day. For some obscure reason the iPhone 3GS which is about a year older than the iPad 1 got upgraded to iOS 6.0 (probably due to its lower screen resolution).

Your iPad doesn't stop working because Apple is no longer updating the software. There may be some newer apps you won't be able to use, but everything on there will continue to work.

Remember that the iPad 2 had the same resolution as the iPad 1. Just a more powerful processor and more RAM.

Some app makers have decided not to make their apps backward compatible (Popular Science as an example)... Imagine losing your entire collection of magazines until you upgrade your hardware ;)

LOL, I missed the 100$ refund last year. God !, I spent over 800 Canadian dollars on my iPad 1.

Personally, I think it's up to the app makers now, do they want to potentially eliminate a 15 million strong user base? If so, I think it's rather shortsighted of them. I think most will probably end up having to offer alternative versions of newer apps that will work with the original Ipad, at least for another year or so. I could be wrong, but I just can't see how limiting your potential user base like that would be beneficial...

Popular Science should be getting the complaint. :)

Its posted .... :(

I've resigned myself to accept that I once paid $2000 back in 1979 for that fantastic TRS-80 model 1 with 4k RAM (Radio-Shack)... Another one for the museum LOL

Actually this thing might be worth a fortune in a 100 years :)

.... PS.... I recall upgrading that original 4k up to 16k, thus giving me a few more years of use ;)

This 'special' situation actually will be a great test.
The reaction of 15 million users facing the rapidly growing obsolescence of their 3-year old product will be interesting to watch. Apple may be forced to a better job of future-proofing their products.... or will anybody really care.

Whereas most of you have long switched from iPad 1 to much newer versions, the truth is the once revolutionary technology is now obsolete. Try to argue against it as much as you want, but it’s not such an appealing thought knowing iOS 6 is not available for the original iPad. So if you want constant updates, you’ll have to spend another few hundred dollars for a much newer device.

... ok, so most of the 15 million users have switched ? I think not ;)
