ITER Tokamak: Fusion works or we'll face a Planetary Bust

Paranormal Adept
China, the EU, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the USA. Its the ultimate international collaboration working on a huge project with unfathomable impact... if it works. Failure is not even an option.

This is humanity's hope for survival in the 21st century and beyond. Harvesting many artificial suns is the only realistic way to sustain the exponential growth of human populations while trying to reduce the size and effects of our growing footprint on this planet. The Philippines just got hit by a massive Typhoon whose source of energy was an ocean heated to 30c down to a dept of 15 meters.

ITER - the way to new energy
ITER is based on the 'tokamak' concept of magnetic confinement, in which the plasma is contained in a doughnut-shaped vacuum vessel. The fuel—a mixture of deuterium and tritium, two isotopes of hydrogen—is heated to temperatures in excess of 150 million°C, forming a hot plasma. Strong magnetic fields are used to keep the plasma away from the walls; these are produced by superconducting coils surrounding the vessel, and by an electrical current driven through the plasma. Scroll over the machine with your cursor to identify the different parts of the machine.

This construction becomes the motor that energizes and sustains a civilization beyond the information age and we're really toast without it. In a way, if we make it past this critical time in our history, humanity gets its independence from planet earth and can potentially survive autonomously with this quasi-infinite source of energy. Our existence will thus depend on artificial means instead of earth based resources.

The earth's population is set to decline, not grow further.
Maybe North America...

Africa’s frightening population growth

The news on the population front sounds bad: birth rates are not dropping as fast as expected, and we are likely to end up with an even bigger world population by the end of the century.
The last revision, two years ago, of the United Nations' World Population Prospects predicted just over 10 billion people by 2100. The latest revision, just out, predicts almost 11 billion.

India and China are going through massive industrialization and the creation of a new middle class pumping out big time pollutants.
