As usual, a visit with Micah Hanks is filled with free-flowing conversation and intriguing theories. We even spent a little time talking about the blockbuster film, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and its influences in mythology and even pop culture.

Your responses are welcome.

We also continue to talk about pop culture in this week's episode of After The Paracast, an exclusive feature of The Paracast+.

THAN YOU GENE FOR SPOILING STAR WARS, GUYS SKIP TO MINUTE 15, I DONT CARE IF ITS SMALL OR BIG SPOILER DUDE, THANK YOU.

EDIT: SKIP TO MINUTE 30, THEY KEEP TALKING ABOUT THE MOVIE. (in paracast+ version)

We said nothing that hadn't been reported widely in reviews. We didn't tell you about the ending or any of the critical plot developments. You after all know who is in that film, so you can make some obvious assumptions.

Forgive me if this has been brought up before somewhere else, but I was wondering about the following:
When the three of you seemed to largely agree that what is in TV and movies is a retread, have any of you seen the following?
The Expanse
Orphan Black
WATCH THESE!!!! They are great!!!!

Also there are so many shows based on comics that have not been done before or that are done better: Daredevil is so much better than the movie. I could not even sit through the movie. Jessica Jones is edgy and good. (the villains on both are really, really well done!)

The Walking Dead is supposed to be incredible but I have a thing about zombies so I'll never know.

of course in terms of Fantasy there is the ubiquitous Game of Thrones.

I am highly anticipating in 2017 American Gods for which Neil Gaiman is writing new material not found in his book/short stories.

and this is really really just the tip of the iceberg.

So, again, retread?

I encourage you to take another look. While a lot of the stuff on TV in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy category is based on books or graphic novels, they certainly are not re doing old stuff- they are bringing much loved material to the screen and I for one applaud the many good TV and movies. Maybe it is because I'm GenX? I think Gen X is well represented in this portion of media, moreso than other areas of culture but that is my take.

I am interested to know the other shows that other people out there are enjoying?

Barbara and I were watching episode 12 of "Jessica Jones" as I read your message.

I agree the Netflix shows are often better than you expect. And I do enjoy a number of the newest shows. I'll have more to say in my tech column tomorrow.

i just started listening to the episode and at the risk of being morbid i found Chris's telling of his NDE so interesting i played it back several times..i'll get to the rest of the episode later...

Regarding his statement of not seeing the tunnel of light and other visions and Gene's asking him if he was skeptical of that aspect, it got me to thinking, by some accounts that "vision" for lack of a better word may have something to do with the sudden release of DMT into the system. I started contemplating that if there was something that inhibited that release then perhaps there would be "no tunnel of light", if that was the case i started to wonder if maybe this hasn't happened to some people and this would be the reason why it is thought that it is thought that some places are haunted by those who departed but never moved on. Perhaps their death involved some trauma to the pineal gland or there was a precondition that prevented the release of DMT into your brain.

At any rate i'm glad that God, Fate or the Trickster saw fit to keep Chris on this realm for the time being.

I am embarrassed to reveal this, but......I like TEEN WOLF on MTV. I consider this a supernatural version of the Hardy Boys. It also has a lot in common with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, although it isn't a retread. But I do have some guidance if you watch it:

ASSUMPTIONS YOU MUST ACCEPT TO ENJOY TEEN WOLF.

1. Some of the supernatural plot devices are not logically linked. We do not often know how Event 1 leads to Event 2 or why. There is a lot of relentless running around in dark places! You MUST accept the plot on FAITH. Trying to make it all work logically in your mind will simply cause the show to fall apart. This is a supernatural show starring teens, not PERRY MASON.

2. There are no parents around except for Stiles dad and Scott’s mother. The others run around at all hours of the night and may not be home for days. There are evidently no curfew laws and no parents exist to be concerned. This is perfectly normal.

3. The kids are good students but never study and constantly run out of classes due to some supernatural emergency. This is perfectly normal.

4. The town attracts every supernatural villain in the universe, one after another each season. This is perfectly normal.

5. The kids constantly travel on dark lonely country roads late at night rather than freeways. This always leads to trouble. They don’t seem to ever notice this.

6. Scott and his gang (The Supernatural Hardy Boys) are always the focus of some supernatural villain, even though they are just high school kids in a small town.

7. A large percentage of all the action takes place in the high school at night for no logical reason (except that a lot of the viewers are high school kids).

8. Much of the supernatural action in the high school takes place in an unlit boy’s locker room. The producers evidently put a lot of money into this set and plan to use it as much as possible.

9. Whenever there is a supernatural confrontation or battle in the school during the day, there usually are no other students around, e.g., the library is totally empty except for Lydia or Scott or Stiles. Then the villain appears! Where is the Librarian? An empty high school during the day is perfectly normal.

10. The high school sometimes sustains great damage, but it is always fixed with no inquiries. This is normal.

11. The show is very gay friendly, which is great! There is always at least one or more muscular handsome gay students, but they seldom are part of the main plot line. They may assist in some minor way, but then they drop out of existence. They seem to be there to be politically correct, but that is all.

12. Almost all the males featured in the show are cute (Styles) or drop dead gorgeous (Derek, his evil uncle, the sheriff’s deputy and assorted wolf guys that rotate each season). The only plain average actors are the extra’s in the background. This is normal.

13. The hospital is full of supernatural creatures and their victims. The hospital experiences continual power failures, stalking monstrous figures, violence and terror. No one except Scott’s mother seems to notice. This is normal.

14. Stile’s dad is the sheriff. He knows about the werewolves and supernatural entities. Yet whenever Stiles brings up a supernatural explanation for some mysterious event AND proposes a theory (which is always correct) his dad scoffs and tells Stiles to shut up. This is normal.

15. The humans (like Styles) are thrown around like rag dolls, often landing hard on their backs. But no spinal damage is done and everyone is fine in the next scene. This is normal for the humans in this program.

Nuff said.

I'm sorry, but I can't stand Micah Hanks. The man uses 10,000 words to say what someone else could say in 100 words or less. The man goes on and on and on and on and on and on. I can't stand him. Thanks.

I very much enjoyed the show. I've made no secret that my interest in the paranormal skews more towards the sociological/psychological side much more so than towards the nuts and bolts side i.e. breaking down and debating and trying to determine the authenticity of various cases. In that i may be in the minority here so it is always a pleasure to have Micah...and other forteans... on the show as from my p.o.v people who consider themselves forteans give a lot more lip service to the more personal emotional side of paranormal issues.

While i don't agree with @beyondthestargate 's personal feelings about Micah i will say it took me awhile to go through this show. i found myself going back and replaying various sections.

My two cents is that Micah is a very cordial, cautious, thorough person with a lot of interesting insight to dispense, but it's sort of like trying to squeeze in 10 lbs. of information into a 5 lb. bag. I don't consider this a shortcoming, i'll abstain from using words like verbose or something more off putting as many people have no issue with this, but personally speaking, i have a little problem processing this flood of information and i am a reasonably intelligent person so i do what i usually do when faced with an obstacle. I adapt. And on occcasion i'm just as guilty as on some posts i include enough caveats to choke a horse just for the purpose of covering my ass.

...At any rate i'm glad that God, Fate or the Trickster saw fit to keep Chris [O'Brien] on this realm for the time being.
Unless something out of school happens, like suicide or an unforeseen accident, O'Brien will transition when he is through with his learning experience in this physical [ir]reality. Same with you, me and everyone else. Not a moment sooner or later, just as pre-planned.

I wonder where in NDE research it says that every person who gets resuscitated automatically must have an NDE, or else the whole thing is just bunk. No serious researcher has ever claimed that to be the case. But people just seem to assume it. Last thing I've heard, only about one in four resuscitated patients reports anything at all.

It could be a form of amnesia. Like the one we have almost every morning when we wake up. Everyone dreams every night, but, rather by accident, it seems, only a very small percentage of dreams are remembered.

Obviously, there is a mechanism that keeps us from remembering things which "happened" or which we perceived when we were "out (of body)". Otherwise the cases investigated by Ian Stevenson, Jim Tucker etc. wouldn't be anomalies. And those are as real a phenomenon as are NDEs.

A question to ask instead, Gene: If NDEs are just a mechanism of our brains, a programme that's started to ease the path to annihilation, why don't the remaining three quarters report them, too?

I was glad to hear your answer to this question, Chris. And, damn, I'm glad you made it through, NDE or not. Just get that virus or whatever it is, looked into until you overcome it.

And if DMT has anything to do with creativity or being a visionary, I doubt that there is a lack of that particular endogenous substance in anyone here.

'The man uses 10,000 words to say what someone else could say in 100 words or less.'
or
'He talks too much.'

Sorry Beyondthestargate - I couldn't resist the chance to illustrate a tiny bit of irony, admittedly a tiny bit but still there for those (me) anal enough to look...

I can't agree with you regarding Micah in that I do like him and I actually like his use of English and great descriptive ability. He probably is too wordy sometimes but perhaps that can be viewed as a quirk of character.

I fully defend your right to voice your dislike over any guest though, because you have done it in a calm. respectful and non-personal way.

We have had plenty posters get very nasty and personal etc about certain people who they obviously do not like at all and there is no call for that kind of behaviour, so I commend your tact even though I disagree with the post!:)

Was anyone else a little disappointed with Micah's comment of not being able to label any case he has looked into as being "Paranormal"?

I'm not in the "I want to believe crowd" I will go where the evidence takes me.

I suppose I'm at a crossroads in the field

Someone please restore my faith that there is indeed something spooky going on this world
:)

Spooky and a possible sign of the Apocalypse.

Note: although I didn't really consider the above statement original, after posting it I did google Palin + Trump + apocalypse. it was interesting how UNoriginal it was.

Well you can equate numerous things that cannot yet be explained as paranormal - even if one day they can be explained.

I definitely think there are paranormal events.
