It's not really a reality show - more documentary type thing where he explores his interests of the paranormal and conspiracies. What I have come to like about Rogan is that he knows what his biases are and has no trouble admitting when he is wrong (like with the whole moon landing thing). He knows he tends to lean towards conspiracy theories. Self awareness is always important - something many people that study the paranormal completely lack.
Has he finally repudiated that ridiculous moon hoax garbage? I was a member of his forums for a brief period and I remember a quote from him saying something like "I don't care what you say or show me, I'll never believe the moon landings took place." I know he backed down a bit when he had Neil Degrasse Tyson on his show, but that didn't really surprise me. He also had a huge thing for the work of Zechariah Sitchin if I recall. I like Joe, he's a funny guy, but he definitely struck me as a tinfoil hat kind of dude, at least some of the time. If he really has renounced that crap and is looking at things from at least a slightly more skeptical position, I'll definitely have to check the show out.
He was completely skeptical on this past episode of the Questions show - he called chemtrails garbage, and he looked into HAARP, but he didn't seem to put much stock in it.
The above is one of those generalizations that marginalizes a specific group through the use of an unfounded absolutist assumption. How? First off, it's not possible for any reasonably healthy human being to "completely lack" self awareness. If anything, it's exactly the opposite. The capacity for self awareness is an inherent trait of human beings in general and therefore it can be safely assumed that all reasonably healthy conscious human beings have it. Secondly, it implies that people who study the paranormal are particularly prone to some malady that makes them abnormal. However, I would contend that those who actually study it, as opposed to being more akin to fans or followers, are more aware of how their interest in the paranormal relates to the world. Thirdly, casually barfing out these kinds of statements is something that certain people seem prone to doing as part of their personal anti-something or another agenda. For example some anti-skeptic could just as easily say, self awareness is always important - something many skeptics and debunkers completely lack. Just substitute your favorite target and presto! A ready made template for slighting some group or another. Nobody is immune. Self awareness is always important - something many politicians, lawyers, and Facebook users completely lack. See the point?... Self awareness is always important - something many people that study the paranormal completely lack.
Yup. I think you just proved it
I see comments like yours as an opportunity for discussion. It may seem like a small thing, but your own experience reveals the level of cynicism that evolves when we deal with a lot of people and the same types of problems over and over again. We lose our sensitivity and patience to look beyond the obvious behavior to the causes, and we simply discard what people think and feel. I found myself doing it recently here with a UFO video from yet another lousy UFO video channel trying to break into the YouTube scene. The person who posted it may have found it interesting, but I just slammed it as a waste of time, and felt perfectly justified doing it. I still do.I hope you know that I'm just busting your balls Ufology. Dealing with as many people as I do, I have come to realize that many lack self awareness, and I don't mean only in the paranormal field.
