Although it is possible, maybe even probable it was a mistake, am I the only one that sometimes thinks events like these or events such as the urination on dead taliban fighters are orchestrated and then the events in question are "leaked" just to keep the natives agitated to maybe justify a continual presence?

Maybe these same guys like throwing stones at hornets nests. If the burnings were unintentional it seems to be a no-brainer to keep the incident under wraps, I don't think it would be that hard. If they were personal possessions then they could have been "lost in transit",certainly not an unusual event in what is essentially a war zone.

Good Point. It does seem we are pretty much given a choice of bad or worse. The two groups seemed to have filled their ranks with polar opposite ideologues, so much the better to drive the herd to one side or to the other side, but no matter which side you allign yourself with your still tied to the other side.

As much as I like Ron Paul, I think he is in a better position now, that is to bring to our attention the sheer folly of our current situation. I fear that if he got himself in the white house he would not only being unable to accomplish many of these things he favors, he could find himself in harms way (just like lincoln kennedy and reagan) courtesy of the REAL forces that are in charge of the usa

The very idea that riots and killing are an option when responding to the burning of a book, any damn book, is absolutely bat-shit crazy insane and irrational people are easily manipulated by anyone who cares to do so. I think the burnings were intentional. The Korans had incendiary (pardon the pun) language written into them. But as writing in the Koran is forbidden, the prescribed rectification is burning. No apology was needed in this case.

That said, I suspect that we will not be able to attain victory in Afghanistan and should cut our losses, negotiate, and depart.

I suppose the US military, or rather the heads behind, knew full well what they were getting into.The Russian-Afghan war didn't happen that long ago, really. The purpose behind going in anyway...multiple theories came up over the years, the ones I don't totally dismiss are the seizing or control of natural resources in the area and/or Afghanistans rich Poppy Fields... As almost always in a case like that, we'll probably never know, but I certainly don't think that the U.S. military didn't know beforehand what they were getting into there.If they didn't, it would scare me a whole lot more than the last years of stories coming from there. Imho, of course.

I would argue that the human species may be endowed w/a bat shit crazy gene that gets activated when one has finally had enough. More to the point its probably safe to argue that certain segments of the human species may be more prone to being "activated" when they have been subject to numerous invasions over the years and/or subject to countless slights, perceived or otherwise. They usually can be readily identified and SHOULD be handled accordingly.

As such, one doesn't tease a bat shit crazy person unless one is equally bat shit crazy or has an ulterior motive

Exactly, if you are going to justify the burnings because of the language written into the korans then why do it and apologize? Take a position and stand by it and be prepared to suffer the consequences.

My original point...which I didn't really express well enough... was if there truly was a security issue w/ the korans, and you knew there would be some kind of blowback, then the prudent thing would be to "lose them", then apologize, then give wronged detainees chicken soup and spiffy new korans if one
TRULY wanted to minimize the resulting damage

I wonder ... Here's a mind experiment. Suppose the world went into an ice age the only way for Muslims to stay warm was to burn all their Korans? Then what? Would they be condemning their souls and become excommunicated from Islam, thereby resulting in the end of Islam? Or would they all refuse to burn their Korans and freeze to death, again resulting in the end of Islam? Or something else?

That's too easy. The Koran is short enough that there are people who have it memorized.
But they would probably burn them. Things that cannot be done by outsiders, like attacking Mosques, is done by Muslims quite frequently.
