Leonard Nimoy Reveals He Has Lung Disease, Warns Against Smoking

Free episodes:

I guess it should come as no big surprise but still it's sad to see Mr. Nimoy in this state[/quote]

At least he quit when he did otherwise he might have already died. Just think of his roles past Mission Impossible which we would have missed.

Agreed.

I'm not surprised either.

Anyone who's lived in the LA region, especially in the past 20 - 30 years, probably has lungs like a smoker's - whether they've ever lit up or not. (Just sayin', I grew up there.)

Also, while quitting does delay chronic obstructive lung disease; it does not stop it. It does reduce the risk of lung cancer quite a bit, over time.

My Grandpa smoked cigarettes and pipes from the ages of 18 to 43 years old when he quitted. At 87 years old he occasionally struggles to clear even basic flem from his lungs.
So Thank goodness I didn't pick up the smoking habit.

My uncle is 95 smoked for over 60 years and worked 40 years in a chemical plant and never got cancer.

Many people don't. Heart disease, stroke, and chronic pulmonary disease are more common - and kill you just as dead. All of them are linked to smoking.

I don't smoke, exercise and try to take care of myself but sometimes it does not matter what you do or don't do.

True enough. I lived pretty close to the Santa Susana field laboratory in southern California growing up - imagine being a little kid, and regularly hearing the sound of rocket engines being tested a few miles away - no wonder we all grew up being crazy about space.

They had some "mishaps" at a liquid sodium test reactor there, and spilled more than a bit of radioactive byproducts including I-131 and Ghod knows what else. Santa Susana Field Laboratory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm on thyroid medicine since 1993, and can't wait until the cancer shows up. (Granted, it may not. Just goes to show.)

It is indeed sad to hear about Mr. Nimoy, whose work has brought so much joy to so many.

That cigarettes are unhealthy has never been a secret. I can recall smokers referring to them as "coffin nails" long before the surgeon general raised alarms.

What I find most ironic is that, as fewer and fewer people smoke, rates of life shortening type II diabetes have risen to near pandemic levels. Social engineering is always full of surprises.

Diabetes is quite treatable, and type 2 is avoidable for that matter. The strides made in public health in the latter 19th and 20th centuries made it possible for us to stop dying of infectious diseases in our youth; and we now stay alive long enough for degenerative diseases like heart disease, atherosclerosis, arthritis, Alzheimer's and so on to get us.

The 'anti-vaccination' crowd really makes my teeth ache.
