Long John Nebel show February 1958

This is for the veterans and the curious.

Today I've been listening to a Long John Nebel Show from February 1958. It features Arthur C. Clarke, Major Aho, Courtland Hastings and Charles Needham and a discussion about the reality of flying saucers. Also if the saucers are from outer space. It's a historical capture of the state of ufolgy in 1958...and boy, things haven't changed very much! :)

They had the same set-up as today with host and guys from different sides...skeptics versus believers. Nebel (Wikimedia Error) was massive in his day and the show went out an incredible 30 odd hours every week.

Clarke's a bit of a conundrum. He stated that it was probable that aliens had visited Earth 'scores of times', but didn't accept that they had 'visited within the past century.' For such a legendary intellect, it's funny to hear him voice something so unfounded in logic.

They discuss the contactee case of Reinhold Schmidt ( Wikimedia Error). Well we all know now that Schmidt was a disreputable scam artist, but the discussion is intriguing.

The show is available from...Long John Nebel On Radio Station WOR - Long John Nebel - Radio Program The Party Line - Feb 7, 1958 - Part 1: Free MP3 Download

Type in the letters and either download or stream. The site is trustworthy and the download is a clean mp3 file.

John was definitely one of a kind. Four to five hours of radio every single day.

I'd love to do that — if our network was willing to fund it of course. :)

Practically a full working week on air without even considering what he must have done off-air in research etc. A busy guy. The show's got a similar format to anything today. It's reminiscent of one of Larry King's UFO specials.

He had producers and other assistants to help out. He started out alone, but, as the show prospered, he got a staff.

As far as I'm concerned, I am used to being on the air for hours, and the ability to take live phone calls will keep it going. But even Long John had a panel of regulars to provide added dimension. Being on the air all alone for five hours can get mighty dull.

There are lots of his shows that are archived. There was even one editon on that theme of Faded Discs (now defunct project unfortunately) by Wendy Connors at the time. I have them in my archive too - I was able to collect shows from Connors and Steve Consulting's compilations. Some of them are of a very poor quality unfortunately. The show that you are refering is one of the best from that list.

About Clarke - yes that is his standard viewpoint. He is famous by his statement "I am not interested anymore in UFO Pictures unless you have one with the registration plates" (paraphrasing) :)

Best Wishes.
