Low Flying 747 over NYC Today

Interesting story, a bit odd:

Today a 747 flew very low over NYC. There was alot of panic, and many buildings were evacuated.

This 747 was accompanied by a military fighter jet.

It was explained later that this was simply a military photo exercise, meant to take pictures of the statue of liberty.

However, despite the FAA's insistence that everyone was warned ahead of time, no one knew about it. Thus the panic and building evacuations.

Also, why use a 747 to take airborne photos? That seems pretty stupid. A helicopter can hover, uses less fuel, and wouldn't freak out the inhabitants of a city where a low-flying 747 CRASHED INTO BUILDINGS.

Could be a case of miscommunication of course, but it does seem kinda weird. At the very least, extremely insensitive to the inhabitants of NYC.

I believe the 747 was the subject of the photography rather than serving as a camera plane. It was the backup Air Force One escorted by two F-16s. Although it may be a pedantic point, no 747 ever crashed into buildings. The ones that did so were much smaller, not that it makes much difference if you see a low-flying airliner. At least it didn't land in the Hudson.

Yes schuyler, I was going to mention that. They must have been photographing the plane with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

Must be for the Presidential/Whitehouse 2010 calendar. I know Ive placed my order. Apparently February is Hilary Clinton... oh I how I yearn for next February.

Probably testing out a newer model FTS (Flight Termination System) which converts a commercial airliner into a remote control toy.
Dov Zackheim was the International Executive for System Planning Corporation, the company which designed this neato little gadget.
He was also comptroller at the Pentagon when a few trillion dollars came up "oopsy."
Donald Rumsfeld announced this fact on September 10, 2001. Boy, some taxpayers were pissed!
Everybody forgot about it the next day.
p.s.
Put another chopper on me and it's coming down.

He really announced that on Sept 10?

Did he also announce the loss of trillions of dollars on Sept 10?

If so, err, hmm. Interesting.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes alot more sense.

Guess which office was destroyed by the plane that hit the Pentagon.
Let's just say there will be no accounting for certain discrepancies which were noticed earlier.
