Mac Tonnies: "I am an Alien Contactee"

Free episodes:

I like hearing the guy talk and he seems like a good guy, but:

I know David jokes with him about this, but I find Transhumanism to be a dangerous cult and just an extention of euegenics. It means I take what he says with a grain of salt, even more so then I usually do with guests on the Paracast.

Whether you see anything in Transhumanism that interests you or not, to call it a "dangerous cult" makes no sense to me at all.

I'm not a person who thinks we should merger with computers and/or robots. If that makes me "odd" then so be it.

It is a CULT. A dangerous cult. Sorry.

Why?

Its not like anyone is going to actually do it. Its more like intellectual masturbation.

Seriously? A dangerous cult?

You're entitled to your opinion, but I definitely don't share it on this issue. Humans want to expand themselves in many ways, including technologically and spiritually. Whatever floats your boat, as long as there's integrity, a desire to learn and a sense of humor.

Me, I'm a SubGenius™, if ya really wanna be scared...

Yes, seriously.

I am not talking about the "average" person who has an interest in Transhumanism. I am talking about the people who have extreme views. Take Dr. Kevin Warwick and Dr. Hugo de Garis. Every listen to these guys? When someone starts going on about killing human babies by putting nanotech in their brains so they become "cyborgs" I tend to consider them both dangerous and for that to be cult behavior. Look at a bunch of the guys who have or work at DARPA. People like that shouldn't be around advanced technology and government grants. They should be going to Sci-Fi conventions or sleeping in the streets. IMO, of course.

Your link though is awesome! :D

That is freakin hilarious. The manifesto is literary gold. Apart from the obvious, there are some damn good points.

Example: "The idea that America (or any country) values individuality as the highest ideal is a myth. Perhaps in simpler times it was true, but no MODERN industrial society can really afford a population of unpredictables."

But letting children watch television is somehow different? Or better?

Children reared on the tube as as easily manipulated as babies with chips in their heads. Same thing, different tech. TV Kiddies salivate on command, mesmerize themselves with shiny blinking shit, and don't have any significant deductive reasoning skills. So before you attack the transhumanists, make sure you take care of the broadcasters, consumers and working parents that use TV as a babysitter, first. THEY are the bigger problem, IMO.

It's better then KILLING HUMANS and making them something else. As negative as my outlook on what is going on I'm not at that point. To me that is insane.

I saw Dr. Garis say exactly that in "Building Gods" and it really is a concern to me. I don't consider that to be "brilliant" be to be mentally ill. He literally said the mother would have to make the choice to KILL her baby and make it a cyborg. That's creepy.

Of course there are so many other people with so many other problems. Hell, let's start with the lunatic Neo-Conservatives first. :D
