Major Forum Upgrade Coming!

We have just completed a major forum upgrade to the new version of vBulletin (4.0) for our science fiction forum, at Attack of the Rockoids Community Forums.

There may still be a glitch here and there, but I think we have most of the heavy lifting done already.

We plan on upgrading this forum in the next few days (the tech forum will come first, since it is smaller with less possibility of havoc).

Meantime, I welcome anyone with CSS, PHP and general forum management and administration experience to take a look at the science fiction forum and let me know if there's anything I can change or fix before we implement that look here.

It looks great! Have you thought about using PHP (or Java or whatever you prefer) to query the user's User Agent and load appropriate CSS for the forum based on their device? (ie. mobile)

Apparently, that sounds like the preferred method of making vBulletin better for various (most often smaller screened) devices.

You need a modification that reformats the forum for mobile devices. Problem is that the one that's available requires users to download a retail mobile app for the iPhone and other platforms. That means you pay extra to see this forum in its mobile glory, and I'm not nuts about that prospect.

Oh? You can't just adjust the code to load a different CSS file? Like, it would take adjusting the code and some trial and error with the CSS, but should be doable, no? It all looks to be tables and classes.

I'm sure it is, if I had someone experienced at CSS to want to engage in the proper trial and error procedures without charging us an arm, a leg and a foot.

When are you thinking of launching? We are short staffed at work and I am wrapping up an online store for someone on the side at the moment. Once I'm done that, I could check it out. You wouldn't really need to wait for a mobile version to launch, as it would be better to try it on an empty version of the forum first though. You could technically launch as is and implement the CSS thing later as for the most part it would be CSS and a little browser check is all. Is there a way to get a trial version to play around with before moving anything to the actual forum? I'm pretty sure vBulletin doesn't give you access to the files unless you've purchased, right?

Two forums are converted now. I just did The Tech Night Owl LIVE Community Forums, but have to fix the inability to display member avatars properly (help would be appreciated) and then put back the ad rotation system.

What's happening... they are turned on but not working?
Precisely. They are placed in the proper folder, with the proper permissions, but don't display either in the AdminCP under Avatars, or in the forum itself. Maintenance stuff, such as rebuilding the database and counters, has no impact.

Peace,
Gene

Just tried to register and keep getting this error.

Not sure what is wrong.

And I assume that they are enabled for the proper usergroups right? Also, you have enabled them in vbgallery?

I have no experience with the latest version so I may be way off base. I did however, notice this below after a quick search... apparently it helped someone who lost avatars after uploading to 3.8

From: http://www.photopost.com/forum/bugs...roblem-custom-avatars-under-3-8-kind-fix.html

Send me a PM and I'll set you with access to that forum. I think we have the avatar thing licked, but maybe you'll want to rummage around in the AdminCP, slightly different for vB 4, and see what's what.
