Mars in 39 days - Veeeeddddy Intedesting

Free episodes:

Indeed! Could this be the technology needed to get us back on track for manned exploration of the solar system?

It may give people a little more incentive to back manned missions to Mars, but if we can't even agree on re-establishing ourselves on the moon, the only thing that's going to get us anywhere is a healthier economy and an administration (democrat/republican/whatever I don't care) that actually cares about space exploration and the technologies that surround it. Or we could just spend money on more projects that will get shelved, and wait for McDonalds or Coca-Cola to lead us into space, 'cause that'll be a great future.

Forget NASA. It will take a private industry to take us to Mars and beyond, if there is an incentive to go there in the first place, of course.

Totally agree, Both NASA and the ESA are kaput, junk, usless and cannot be trusted. Private Industry is the way forward, but saying that, as long as the people have the vision to explore for the people and not to exploite it for their pockets.

God what a loaded statement that is. I really really wish that someone would explore for humanity's sake. But, the ONLY way private industry will enter the game is for profit. Welcome to the real world; or should I say real solar system?

I honestly hate that is the case. But there is no way private industry is going to go to that expense without a great monetary reward.

Now, some private foundation that has a deep, deep endowment -- that may work to explore for pure science. But, chances are whomever endowed that foundation is going to want a return somehow. It is all so disheartening, to be honest.

It does bring up some interesting issues though. If BobHeck, Inc., does all the work and establishes the first, sole base on Mars, and I find (for example) gold, platinum, rubies, diamonds, etc..., I guess I can just start stocking up and bringing them back and selling them, right? I mean nobody else can go get them, just BobHeck, Inc. Will the world allow that?

This sounds very interesting and lets hope the economy class seats are cheaper than a high rise apartment in a hotel:)

You are absolutely correct in saying that profit is the only way that a private industry will ever enter space exploration. It has been the case historically where any serious exploration of distant lands was done to discover new sources of trade and there is no reason to assume it's going to be any different in the future. Exploration for humanity may come about eventually, although I doubt it, but what will initially drive the space exploration and the breakthroughs needed to go far into space is the private industry looking for a profit. I always look at shows like Star Trek and can't help to think how bogus that future scenario seems to be, at least to myself. You know how there is a Federation that sends out humans to distant places to explore new frontiers for the sake of humanity. To me, the most likely scenario would be something like the movie 'Avatar' where big, powerful corporations would send out human colonists to establish mining operations on distant planets. This sounds more like the real world.

Good point. We would have to be in a really bad situation on Earth in order for space mining to be more profitable. I can't imagine any situation within the next several decades where that would be true. Unless some unknown, super valuable ore was discovered that would change that.
