Meteorite smashes into Nicaraguan capital

Free episodes:

Good job it didnt hit a populated area, in s america's poorest country, could of been devastating, and caused near 500 dollars worth of damage, if it had struck the posh bit of the city..

Lucky miss but also we are very lucky it was not all that big... Is it just me or are we getting a fair number of impacts of late?

Wow! That would ruin your day. Thanks Stonehart.

So could this be a bomb or missile going boom? Or some thing else... Clearly some thing went bang.

I was sort of struck that in the initial report the event was spoken of in the context of seismic waves and nothing was mentioned about a flash that probably should have been seen around the county. It was apparently just before midnight but you would think someone would have noticed it. Also going on that initial information there was speculation...based on seismic impact...that the object may have been big as a house. If that was the case I would think that the impact crater would have been larger and more destructive.

NASA Raises Doubts About Reports of Nicaraguan Meteorite

You know what's interesting is that this event happened in conjunction (sort of) with an flyby of another known event...assuming this was an extraterrestrial visitor.... If i recall correctly it is a similar scenario to that big event that happened in Russia last year that was caught on car cams, lit up the skies and caused not a little destruction. That meteorite, found in a lake, was unexpected but came in right on the heels of an expected event which caused initial speculation that a chunk had broken off the initial meteor/object.

I was going to make a wisecrack about Nicaragua trying to get its hands on a missile or weapon of some sort, a few comments on the bottom of the Nat Geo page would suggest that maybe this could be the case. If that was the case, I would have to wonder what the BFD is and why the need for a cover up story... if this is the case...anybody know of any arms treaty that they are supposed to be signatories to ?

Not being as observant as normal myself Wade so good call on the lack of an observed flash... Been working way to many hours of late.

Not sure about arms treaty but I guess one could hunt around and find out.

Yeah it is a very real problem Mike and one we are woefully unready for.
What, you mean Bigelow and those companies who want to mine asteroids are not going to have the legit version of Asteroids up in our atmosphere to save our asses? Plus we would finally be able to shoot down the flying saucers.
