Disco still sucks.
I get breaking news flashes from CNN in my email.

I just got a breaking news email, not for entertainment (not signed up for those), mind you -- general, top news, breaking news.

Subject: CNN Breaking News (nothing more, just that)
Content:
-- At memorial service in L.A., Michael Jackson's daughter Paris says he was "the best father you could ever imagine."

Ex-frickety-cuse me? That is breaking news? Look, it's sad, sad, sad that MJ died. But the fact that his daughter said he was a great dad at the funeral is breaking news? Get a grip.

When I get an email that has the subject CNN Breaking News, I expect to hear that Krakatoa re-erupted, they found Jimmy Hoffa in Ed McMahon's closet, that Al-Quaida just quit because we gave them all Wiis, or we have cured Diabetes.

The fact that a sad, distraught, and emotionally hurting little girl says at her dad's funeral that he was a great dad (something that unfortunately goes on at many funerals, every single day of every single year), is not news. It is sensationalism and exploitation of the highest degree.

Screw CNN.

it is a diversion. a basic magician's tool. while you are attracted to the sparkle, the magician pulls off his trick.(the suckers rally crashes while the senate blocks the bill to audit the "fed")

Welcome to the three ring circus of popular junk journalism. It's been around a while and unfortunately, it's going to stick around.

Yeah, I've heard many a complaint about how this event has sucked all the air out of the news over the last 10 days... Speaking of which, does anyone know when the rescheduled broadcast date is for Hastings and Fox on Larry King?

Meanwhile, the House passes the cap and trade bill...possibly the largest single tax increase in U.S. history.
By the way, I thought Michael Jackson sucked while he was alive. My opinion remains the same. Without Quincy Jones he would have been long forgotten.

Yeah, but it making it through the Senate is about as likely as a Kennedy dying of natural causes.

The media "breaking news" flashes no longer means what it used to. Now its just "new" news. Breaking news = just released or fresh news. Silly

Yea the MJ death was/is media overkill.

Being a music fan/scholar I can recognize his contribution to the craft. No doubt it was substantial in the 1980's. I recall once being in a huge club back in the day when the Thriller video was just released. It would play more than once during the evening on the large screen. Each play the entire venue would come to a standstill and watch in rapt attention. It was unique.

however...

During the memorial service, before and after the "best ever" claim has been thrown about by some.

However one should pause when granting the "best ever" moniker. Its thrown around easy depending on which era your discussing. To say the Beatles were greater than Bing Crosby or Michael Jackson is greater than Elvis is in my opinion presumptuousness. Each one had massive influences during their era with some continuing to this day.

How is "greatness" measured? Albums sold?fan base? Popularity? Longevity?

My opinion is that The Beatles actually fit much of the criteria for greatness..albums sold over a billion, fan base huge, popularity established, longevity,(recent Rock Band release).

Granting MJ the "greatest of all time" label is in my opinion an emotional reaction to his passing and a maybe a little marketing as well. Only time will tell. Lets reconvene 10 years from now,(not literally) and see who among those I've discussed is still relevant.

There is only one among those above I'm pretty sure will still be relevant..and that's Bing Crosby.

When any celeb with any sort of controversy dies, the media eats it like french onion soup, which is delicious, but I digress. After the Anna Nicole Smith thing, I came to realize that whenever there is a celeb death, you shouldn't watch any news for a week or two, cause your just gonna end up mad.

I just google stuff like Korea, Iran, G8, NHL, and check the USGS. That normally gives me all the stuff that is relevant and that interests me, aside from that, there are a few podcasts you can rely on to actually give you news and pertinent information.
