Tomorrow afternoon, I will be putting my female cat down.

She's 8, and is suffering from renal failure. She dropped a lot of weight in a short amount of time, and we thought it was due to stress from the road construction.

We were wrong. Forcefeeding her, force watering her, all of it has been fruitless.

The vet was less than helpful, and other issues have cropped up as to how my cat got sick in the first place.

It's why I'll be off line for a while. I've been kind of a jackass lately and it's due to this and other things happening in my world.

That really sucks. I am very deeply bonded with cats myself, and have had to do such before as well. I wish you the best in coping with this and not letting it drag your spirit into mire. Celebrate the awesomeness that you've enjoyed together.

Hey Tommy, sorry to hear about your cat. In my opinion pets are part of the family. Look after yourself. I look forward to your contributions in the future, your posts make a difference to this board.

Tommy, I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm also sad to hear your vet has been unhelpful. I've lost two male cats to renal failure, so have an idea of what you're going through. Take care, eh?

Our current cat (we've had maybe ten over the years) is also suffering from feline renal insufficiency evidenced by drinking and peeing a ton of water. We hope he can stay ahead of things a while longer, and I can sympathize with your heartache. Pets are part of the family. Do you have the option of another vet's opinion? Or maybe it's just time. I'm sad for you. :frown:

I'm really sorry too, Tommy. I have three cats and they enrich my life so much. You have my great sympathy.

I have two indoor cats and the latest neighborhood stray. Because the latest is prone to run outdoors before I can stop her, I have to keep the cats vaccinated now. For years, I didn't do that with the two indoor cats because my vet admitted that the rabies vaccination would eventually give them cancer as it had my previous kitties.

Not vaccinating creates problems in that no vet or pet hotel will take them if I want to go on a vacation. I have to enlist neighbors or a house sitter to tend to them, something the cats prefer of course. But I'm very suspect of all the vaccines they foist on my animals. If I can avoid yearly vaccinations, I will.

Just out of curiosity Tommy, what were you feeding her?

For 8 years we fed her Nutro brand cat food. There were times when we'd feed her canned stuff, but those were few and far between, and the only time we did that, was to give her something of a treat.

In mid March of this year, out of the sake of convenience, we bought some Purina Brand cat food, Friskies canned crap. We did that for about a week or so, and then changed back over to the nutro. It was just after this that she started to lose some weight. We thought it was stress, because at the same time we had road construction going on in front of the house, and the whole house was shaking and stuff.

She would hide, and then come out for meals and stuff. Then we noticed that she started losing a LOT of weight. Took her to the vet, and they essentially told us there was nothing that could be done. We force fed her, force watered her for the last week or so.

I've come to the conclusion that some vets care about their bottom line, than about animals. If money were no object, I could get my cat a kidney transplant. Literally. Instead I'm having to do the unthinkable today.

If I were to find out that Purina had a food recall, and didn't tell anyone, I would literally drive to wherever I needed to, and force whomever it was that made that decision to eat the remaining case of canned catfood I have sitting in my kitchen.

I did read however that Nutro had a food recall earlier this year. I am wondering if perhaps it could have been the Nutro brand cat food? Who knows. Regardless I'm taking my pet to the vet for the last time today, and it's killing me to do it.

I've been feeding my dog's Nutro brand for a few years until I heard about the FBI launching an investigation into reports of animals being poisoned. I suspect melamine.
Now I make their food from scratch. Chicken, and a variety of whole grains. They are much more excited about dinner time these days.
I feel your pain, man. I've got a 14 year old pit bull that I found as a puppy when I was homeless and living in a tent. She's not so well these days...gettin' old. I'm tearing up as I type this thinking about the inevitable.

Sorry, Tommy. I lost three of my cats last year within three months, all siamese from the same family. It sucks. Take care.

Cardio Myopathy.

We finally got the answer today. Her heart was bad.

Not the food, not anything we did, it was just genetics.

Part of me feels okay about things, another is kind of pissed, but think that more should and could be done for pets with some of these issues. It takes a certain imagination to come up with solutions to problems like these, and a lot of vets do not have that sort of ability.

Regardless, the new vet we have will be taking care of our other cat, and hopefully things will go better this time around.

The penalty for having a cat or dog is the short time they will be with you. I had a dog for nearly 17 years that I had to put down a year ago and I still get upset about it (like right now). And now we have an 8 year old dog and a one year old cat (my first cat). Either way it is gutwrenching and sickening to have to do something like that. Sorry about your loss.

Totally agreed... how we view / treat animals tells a lot about our spiritual evolution. I would not be surprised to discover that "aliens" are observing this very thing as one of the metrics to gauge us by, and it could very well be that part of the whole "abduction" phenomenon is rooted in giving us a taste of perspective in that regard.

Tommy, I was very sorry to hear about all this. I know the loss of a pet is as bad as the loss as any family member.
