Among a lot of things I do to keep the wolf away from the door is write, so I'm a writer. It all began back in 1987 after I medically retired from my department, and it began when I bought my first Tandy computer. Hey, I really fell in love fast with computers.
I was traveling quite a lot then and needed something to take on the road, and laptop computers were not cheap nor light. I ended up buying a Tandy Model 102 (google it) and fell in love again. By todays standards this thing is woefully anemic, but it filled the bill then. (and if truth be known, I even miss it today.)
Along about 2001 or 2002 a girlfriend of my wife was looking for something to write with on the road and I told her about something I discovered in Writer's Digest Magazine ... the AlphaSmart 3000. No internet, no connection except to your computer with a USB cable, no distractions, you want to write? Okay, with this gadget you write and thats all! She ordered one and then decided she didn't like it because the screen was too small. I bought it from her and a love affair with the AlphaSmart 3000 and me began. I wrote more than half my novel "Past Sins" on it. It was so cool, take it anywhere ... I mean anywhere ... and you were off. Instant ON, powered by 3 AA batteries (up to 700 hours of power ... Yep! You heard me ... 700 hours.)
I've used this for years but over time the keyboard became a hassle. Sticky keys, etc. caused me to look for a replacement. I found it in the AlphaSmart NEO. Kind of an upgraded 3000 ... bigger screen, you can change the fonts, lots of commands, etc. I ordered one and just got it. (I am writing about it on my NEO to upload to this forum!) You write on the NEO, plug in your cable (USB) hit the send key on the NEO and before you can say DAMN! its on the computer. Did I say this only weighs 2 pounds? Did I tell you yet that these were originally made for school kids which mean that it is "KID TOUGH"? Did I mention powered by 3 AA batteries? Oh yeah, I did. Well sorry but I am still excited!
So, you like to write? You travel to Starbucks with your laptop and then have to look for an electrical socket to plug it in? You can't find one so you boot up using the internal battery, wait 5 minutes while it does all its stuff, then you write 4 paragraphs and its out of juice? Check out an AlphaSmart NEO word processor, did I mention its powered by 3 AA batteries with up to 700 hours of power?
