Paranormal Adept
My Hp laptop sits flat on the table. It runs hot and the fan has to be on constantly. Seems to be a design flaw. The vent is on the bottom of the computer but it doesn't have any legs or lifts. I have it on a small pad right now to keep it elevated. It helps some but it's still running hot. Causes video to skip and lag. Anybody have any tips or am I just stuck with a lagging laptop until I can afford a new one?

If the fan is filled with dust, you might use one of those aerosol compressed air containers. Otherwise, maybe check one of those malware/fixit apps for a PC that's supposed to clean out the "cruft" and rid it of viruses. Next time get a Mac.

Are those overstock places online reasonable? I buy online at Amazon and I have used ebay in the past. But, that's about it.

You can check for refurbs or closeouts at any authorized Apple dealer after new models arrive. For used, don't go more than a year or two back. You want to be compatible with the latest OS and apps.

Steve, I don't know what your needs are exactly, but I've always had a PC desktop, but when I was wishing for something smaller for podcasts I asked my youngest son who lives at home going to college if I could use his "original iPad". He'd sort of put it aside and used his apple laptop for schoolwork, but he'd always enjoyed the iPad. I'd never given it a thought, just remember a friend down the street had raved about his when they came out.

I quickly became addicted to it. I always do my reading propped up in bed, but browsing the net, for instance amazon for books, had a limited life for me because sitting in the chair doing that mouse thing made it a chore after awhile. But I found that with the iPad, I could lie in bed, and it was so much more comfortable. I even found an app for chess.com and can play online more comfortably.

Then disaster struck. My son went out of town for three weeks and wanted his iPad back! I did without for a day, and then just figured I'd buy my own, and looked around, and ended up just calling the apple store and ordering a brand new iPad 2. I gulped a bit at the price, $399, but shipping was free and it was in my hands in four days fed ex. The only delay at even that was it sat in the fed ex facility (you're given a tracking number) in china for two days, then suddenly in anchorage, and I thought oh, heck, another three days, but no, next day it was here.

It's got to be twice the speed of the original iPad. I've got high speed wireless Internet in the house, and it's light and comfortable to hold in bed. I'll never, ever(!) do anything but read actual paper books, but for browsing the net this ipad2 is just superb in speed and comfort. I could have spent another hundred for the latest iPad, but I just wanted what my son had, which was comfortable and fast, but this ipad2 leaves it in the dust. I love it! Kim

Tyder what model HP have you got? if it is the 2011 Pavilion dv7 then they are very bad for overheating issues (lots of punch packed into a small space with not so good cooling ability).... They are also hard to clean, I clean the one I have once every other week with canned air and take it apart every now and then to clean it right out.
To keep it cool I use a cooling pad as well just to keep air flow under it.. My not book never has this problem but then again I have other issues with that now and then.. most likely operator error :D

Mine is an hp g-60120US. I can't understand why they didn't put folding legs under it. I use my Kindle Fire to read and watch some of the movies off Amazon Prime but when it comes to browsing forums and websites I'm on my laptop.

Yeah the air vents under it will get blocked or just not have enough air flow.(tend to suck in dust more than you think as well).
The only think I can think of trying is the canned air first to get the dust out then make yourself a set of fixed legs to sit it upon.. did that with the old dv7 running vista and it keeps is cool enough.. vista still sucks however but that's another issue :p (more to do with how much you have resource wise for vista as it works fine on a well specked PC).

If it has dust problems as I said before that just keep it over heating and just blowing it out did not solve the problem then it will be open heart surgery I am afraid.. try find the service manual to the model to guide you step by step on how to get to the heat sink and cooling fans.

Sorry to hear about your PC problems. Heat is the number one killer of electronics. Is there a way to to access a system readout of CPU operating temperature? If blowing the crud out of the system, or whatever, doesn't bring it to within "operational limits", more trouble could be ahead.

I once had a desktop with CPU thermal issues and it turned out the CPU had not been properly mated to the heat sink, and the video was acting much as you described.

Good luck.
