Netbook help needed.

Paranormal Adept
I've been looking for a good netbook that I could surf the web on. I would love to get an Ipad2 but it is out of my price range right now. Also, since I simply want a really portable pc that will do youtube and facebook and the Paracast forum I don't need a really high end machine. Walmart has an Accer with a 10.1 screen for around $248 which is much less than a tablet. But, I don't want to get a lemon that will run hot after watching youtube or netflix for 15 minutes. I am looking for a small inexpensive netbook and not a full size laptop. Any suggestions? I know some of you are really good with technology. I am looking for something in the $250 range.

I have played with that stuff. They're junk, pure and simple. But if you are willing to tolerate something for a year or two, knowing it won't be terribly reliable, and that's what you can afford, go for it.

But the problem is that these cheap netbooks aren't very good at video. Maybe you can test one at the store to see. You get what you pay for. Or maybe look on eBay for something used.

Thanks Gene. I have to admit the ole "you get what you pay for" rule is true. Maybe I should just save up and get a little more expensive one. Any good ones out there that you would recommend that wouldn't totally break my bank?

Netbooks just aren't very good. You'd do better with a used first edition iPad. At least you get really good performance, the latest Apple software, but there's no camera in the iPad 1.

Maybe, I'll just save up and get the Ipad 2. After all, if I'm gonna count my pennies I might as well get a good product. I'm still watching to see if the Kindle Fire comes out with some fixes and improvements for their product.

The Kindle Fire isn't nearly as good with video as the iPad 2, and a 7-inch form factor is not proven as convenient. The Fire is sold by Amazon at a loss to provide Amazon's storefront. They want you to buy stuff, and don't care about the other services so much.

For an iPad 2, look at used and refurbished. So it'll be maybe $399 or $349 if you look hard enough. If you can wait two or three months, Apple will introduce an iPad 3 of some sort, and may sell the iPad 2 for a lot less. Meantime, save your pennies, up your credit card limits or whatever works.

I love my Kindle Fire. I've pretty much stopped using my PC after getting one. Doing simple tasks like browsing internet, facebook or youtube is a snap. I love the 7 inch format. I don't think it's too small. IPad2 is great if you can afford it and you need more functionality that it offers. For my purposes Kindle Fire is great.

I've heard good things about Nook too.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite Xmas before last and have really enjoyed it. It has a full size keyboard hasn't let me down yet. I thought I would have to throw some more memory in it but that hasn't been the case. I'm trying to remember how much I paid for it, I think it was around $800 bucks or cheaper being a black Friday thang.

I wish I could afford a Macbook right now. But, my budget is just begging for a netbook. It's just that Gene makes a lot of sense. I'm afraid I'll just be having to buy another one in a year or two if I don't get something a little more expensive than the $250 one at Walmart.

I would stay away from netbooks.
There are some really good ACER laptops available for about $450, and that's here in Canada. The prices are probably even better for you. I got my mother-in-law an Intel i3, 6GB RAM, 750GB laptop that works great. Windows 7 is a great operating system.
