According to the Nuremberg Gazette, the "dreadful apparition" filled the morning sky with "cylindrical shapes from which emerged black, red, orange and blue-white spheres that darted about." Between the spheres, there were "crosses with the color of blood." This "frightful spectacle"was witnessed by "numerous men and women." Afterwards, a "black, spear-like object" appeared. The author of the Gazette warned that "the God-fearing will by no means discard these signs, but will take it to heart as a warning of their merciful Father in heaven, will mend their lives and faithfully beg God, that he avert His wrath, including the well-deserved punishment, on us, so that we may, temporarily here and perpetually there, live as His children." In the same year, a Lutheran clergyman on progress in Nuremberg wrote: "...God the Almighty has ... placed in the heavens many horrible and hitherto unheard of signs... We have seen far more signs now than in any other year. The sun and the moon have been darkened on a number of occasions. A crucifix in the sky was seen, as were biers and coffins with black men beside them. Further, rods and whips and many other signs were seen in a multitude of places... and scarcely a year has passed of late without an eclipse of the sun or moon..."

Early sci-fi? Church propaganda? I know of the case but haven't really researched to see if there are corroborating reports. It's a kick-ass woodcut. It shows one crashed in a field. I wonder if that's why German engineering was at one time so advanced.

We should also not forget that 16th century um, "standards of journalism" (archivism? chroniclism? - that sounds like Disaster By Public Records, but I digress) were consistent with say, pravda.ru.

This is a really fascinating case, of course, there's a problem with sourcing. If memory serves me correctly, there was only one modern literary reference to the episode. And yes, it is indeed featured in Kimball's "Best Evidence" documentary.

I remember taking Art History, and the first thing I thought when I saw this, was could this have been some kind of event seen in the skies?

There are so many instances of flying saucers and aliens in ancient art it's not even funny. The Renaissance was rife with these kinds of paintings.

Seriously though, I have come to believe that our planet might have been a little more social with Extra-Terrestrials than we might have been thinking, and more to the point, I believe that those who have written our history may have written out, or deliberately omitted what the real truth is in regards to visitors from the stars.

In the top 10 list, the majority involves military accounts (which were excluded from project blue book)... now we know why (..the credibility factor).

This is ridiculous. Its a no brainer that alien visitors would conceal their presence. Our bleeding edge military technology has stealth features incorporated in it and the next generation of uniforms replaces camouflage with invisibility cloaks. Where do you think the next 100 years of exponential technological development will take us.

Over the last several months, DefenseReview has been reporting on a visual cloaking technology (a.k.a. adaptive camouflage technology a.k.a. electro-optical camouflage technology a.k.a. chameleonic camouflage technology) that's claimed to have been developed by Advanced American Enterprise (AAE) for manned ground vehicles, UGVs (Unmanned Ground Vehicles)/Ground Robots (including weaponized UGVs like SWORDS), infantry warfighters (i.e. human beings), and helicopters (both manned and unmanned).

Any civilization that survived the nuclear age on its own planet and interstellar contact with another technological civilization has well oiled defense mechanisms, knows how to infiltrate and be covert... wouldn't you think ?

Why aren't extra-terrestrials a threat ? There's relatively high probability that the 'missing link' that antropologist have been looking for is out there. ... a 14 billion year old universe, and planet earth is the first trigger of sentient life (350,000 years ago). Gimme a break please.

Mr. Neanderthal here was the Model T., able to breathe oxygen, upright posture with bone density able to withstand the 9.8 m/s2 gravity of the planet. Fine specimen, but replaced with Model H which had more cranial capacity and jaw structure permitting more complex communication (GUH)

That little battle in 1561 was a little squirmish between rival seeding civilizations. Stealing genetic material is a no-no ROFL.

Just wanted to mention that the second picture posted is not from Germany, but from Basel (Switzerland), August 7, 1566.
The report of eyewittness Samuel Coccius says that there were black balls fighting with each other with high speed in the air. IN the end some became red, and slowly vanished.

To the first picture: Whats missing in the posted description is the interesting point that the phenomena actually all crashed to the ground. Everything vanished in big smoke / damp.

The first picture shown denotes a Battle of Robots that levitate. The winner of the battle is represented by one of the Black swords which are the metallic prothetic arms of the robots. The robots are the pilots of small triangular craft and members on alien craft.(just speculating)

Heres another strange account from 47 years later:

In August 1608, the inhabitants of the South France, from Marseilles to Genoa, witness a true UFO flap, reported in a chronicle entitled "Discours des terribles et espouvantables signes apparus sur la mer de Gennes".

In Nice, the inhabitants see three strange luminous vessels which evolve at high speed above the city. The three machines stop near the fortress and go down above the waters where they cause the water to boil and emit a red-orange vapor.
To the great stupor of the numerous witnesses, two humanoïd beings with large heads and large luminous eyes, dressed in a red suit with silver scales, connected to the flying machine by tubes, engage themselves in several hours of strange work.
