Actually, a lot of mobile devices offer some signal degradation when holding it in specific ways. This is particularly true when signal strength is marginal. I don't know if the iPhone is worse than others, but the iPhone 3G and Google Android Nexus One exhibit similar symptoms, according to published reports.
