I came across this, and know that David is a fan, so figured I'd post it.

We talk about this on The Tech Night Owl LIVE, on the October 11 episode. This is, one hopes, a trend. The artists are declaring war against the greedy music companies, and the world will never be the same. I hope :D

Yeh, hope it becomes more common too.

Oct 11? That's tomorrow. What else is the show going to be about? I might listen.

Standard stuff. iPod quality control. Wacky support calls, and other Apple-related issues. When David is on, it's open season, however.

I didn't know you take calls. Interesting. I don't have a Ipod yet, but will in the future. Thankfully you archive the shows there like here if I remember correctly. Come in handy in the future.

Thats an interesting idea. Personally, I pay for all my music downloads, from two sources mainly www.bleep.com and of course the iTunes music store. If someone has produced the music professionally, I think that to own the rights to play it via copy of the CD, digital download or whatever form it may be in that you should pay for it.

What I dont believe in is getting ripped off by the means of DRM which just serves to prevent me from playing the music on/through the variety of devices that I own and use.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out for Radiohead in terms of how many paid downloads there are compared to non-paying ones :)

Wacky support calls

lol - that brings a certain few episodes of Foamy the Squirrel to mind

Foamy calls Tech Support (some bad language ;) )

Well I downloaded the Radiohead album this morning and think it's one of their best. I paid $10 and it was definitely worth it.

I'm looking forward to hearing some follow up regarding how pleased the band is with whatever revenue they get from the album. I also wonder how many Americans are going to inadvertently pay double for the album since the check out currency is UK Pounds.

I was wide awake early, early this morning - 1:30 Eastern time - and got the album as it shipped. I paid $6 for it, as my lovely girlfriend has ordered me the $80 box set for my birthday, but I didn't want to wait until it ships. That $6 represents a multiple of the regular royalty rate, and to be honest, I would probably give them another $4 for uncompressed tracks, but what the heck. I'm sure that they're making out just fine.

It's a great album - damn, I'm just loving "Reckoner", it's my favorite track so far. I'm so very proud of my fave band, they're leading us to the next phase of the music business. Bless 'em.

The only ones who are bemoaning this are the media companies and those blood suckers who hang on to them for media stories. This is the brave new world of music production and distribution.

Radiohead's site was slammed when I tried it a while back, but I'm definitely buying this recording. :D

I just spent around 44 bucks on music yesterday, so I need to wait abit before buying RH new one.

Some of what I bought is a solo album by Jeff Martin from Tea Party. Tea Party's last 3 releases sucked compared to their first three. After watching interviews, Jeff indicated that the record company made them go a more commercial route. Sucks. What do execs know about music? Leave that to the artist please. Anyway, hopefully what Radiohead is doing will lead to cutting out the middleman, which waters down music I really like.

Box set too? Lucky guy:D

I'm partial to "All I Need" myself.

Have you heard of Towering Above The Rest? It's a 180+ track fan compilation of Radiohead's rare, alternate, live, B-sides, and unreleased work. If you haven't got it, a quick Google search will reveal a few places to get it. Radiohead has a lot of great material that has never made it on their full albums so I highly recommend this set.

Lucky indeed! :)

I'm aware of that compilation, and in fact own every track that's on it. My Radiohead collection is complete, everything they've ever done and has seen the light of day, is in my possession. I'm about as hardcore as a true fan can be.

Seems to me the whole hoopla about how music is distributed wouldn't really exist at all if the music being done today were any good. Case in point; everyone's focusing on the fact that the album is being sold online (like this is some huge technological leap forward), but no one is talking about how good the music is. If the album was great, who cares how it's sold? Case in point... I can go to a CD store and buy a CD that's going to give me ten times the satisfaction of that Radiohead album.

I guess I don't *get it*.

More for those that can't sit through MTV to see if and when this vid airs like me.
