In his career, especially during the 1960s, session drummer Hal Blaine was featured on dozens and dozens of hit recordings. He was part of an unofficial group of California based studio musicians called The Wrecking Crew.
Even when a band had his own drummer when they played live, Blaine would handle the studio chores because of his creativity and the speed in which he developed original drum parts for hit recordings.
The Monkees were attacked when it was learned they mostly used session musicians when recording their hit songs. The same was true for many other bands, including the Association, the Beach Boys, the Byrds, Paul Revere & the Raiders and others.
