It was a year ago that I was in Scotland for a week, after we finished shooting four episodes of Ghost Cases and some touring in England (5 shows in 4 nights in London!!). I hadn't been back to Scotland since 1988, when I came home after a year of study. It was good to re-connect with a land that speaks to me more than any other besides my own home.

If I had a dollar for every time I listened to this song while walking along the Tay, or hillwalking in the highlands back in 1987 - 88, the drinks would all be on me!

Whereabouts in Scotland did you study? I grew up in a village on the banks of the Tay, it's all beautiful til you get to Dundee!

University of Dundee, 1987-88 (on exchange from Acadia University)... class medalist in history (always good to "steal" from the locals).

I loved Dundee - a bit more working class than my home of Halifax, but it was a lot of fun for a young 20-21 year old. St. Andrew's was great as well - shot several rounds on the Old Course. My favourite place that I visited back then in Scotland, however, was probably Edinburgh... although it was hard to beat Stirling, Aberdeen and Inverness.

Alas, I didn't spend much time on the west coast, other than flying into and out of Prestwick, and coming through Glasgow on the train on the way back from England and Wales on spring break.

Fortunately, I spent a week on the west coast last year - Glasgow, through Crianlarich and Glencoe, and then 4 days on Mull.

I grew up just outside Perth, which is 20 miles or so from Dundee and would get taken there on occasion as a kid when my mum wanted to going shopping in a bigger town. Was never massively fond of the place, though I've usually had a good time when I've visited as an adult.
The West Highlands are beautiful, one of the best things about Edinburgh is that you can hop on a train and be there in a couple of hours. The train ride is worth it in itself.
I've been to Vancouver Island, and we visited some temperate rain forest, which was apparently how Scotland would have looked before the Caledonian forest was cut down. The terrain is a bit like Scotland turned up to 10, with better weather and minus the drunken violence!
