This is an interesting read. The article is about the Russians having a "doomsday device" that would guarantee a nuclear retaliation on the US in case we struck them first.

If this story is indeed true, or mostly true, it would conform to the Soviet war doctrine. It makes sense that they would have an array of sensors with several failsafes- and that those sensors would be very basic in design and purpose.

Makes me glad that both sides decided to stand down. I still remember the "air raid" siren tests every Wednesday morning at 10am. I think they stopped sometime during the late Carter early Reagan years.
