I always thought it looks like the moon was made from two halves pushed together, and excess matter was pushed out at the edges of the join.

Now, of course I can't explain why two perfectly nice hemispheres were around, nor how they came together so perfectly. Mmmm, two 'perfectly's' in one sentence.
