As the poll done for National Geographic suggests, a good number of people suspect the aliens have already arrived, presumably on UFOs or through interdimensional travel. Most scientists scoff at that idea. "Why would they appear only to cranks and weirdos?" British physicist Stephen Hawking asked earlier this month. But Shostak thinks it's only a matter of time before extraterrestrial civilizations actually do make themselves known, by sending signals across the light-years. Almost a decade ago, he predicted that we'd detect those signals by the year 2025, and today he told me he's sticking by that prediction.

What he probably meant is that our technologies will have evolved enough to detect some type of intelligent signal in about 15 years.

LOL@ ET's will make themselves known :rolleyes: ... They're waiting for us to evolve before they send their signals ROFL. Maybe he doesn't want to tell us that we're at the mercy of whatever is out there for the moment. Why this infantilizing phraseology ?

I think you hit it on the head with that one.

China is sending signals and the world is forced to prepare. Once we start detecting signals from outside we'll be allocating massive resources to decode them. Our objective number one ? To find out where we fit in the galactic scheme and how sentient life operates beyond its home world. Are earthly political scenarios relevant on a galactic scale and should we expect invasions are the questions the world armies will suddenly need to address.
