Simulated Reality Theory

The Paracast is very good at being open minded about sourcing of UFO's or other paranormal phenomenon. Sometimes even when Gene or David is asking a question they list the common possible sources: ET, multidimensional, crypto, etc. But one thing that hasn't really been discussed is the idea of simulated reality.

While people seem to like Macs theory of cryptos, it isn't anymore likely than anything else. It is just one of the possibilites. But for whatever reason people like this theory and are attached to the notion of hearing more about it ,etc. Understandable.

So my question is does anyone know of a coherent person advocating simulated reality?? I don't know much about this theory per se, but it should be among the possibilites. And perhaps someone might make a sensible persuasive argument in favor of it. So without googling abundance I thought I would ask here first for your recommendations.

In a world that becomes increasingly more complex than we even thought, I wonder about the possibilities that challenge current reality as we see it. Maybe we are in some program inside a master computing entity. and maybe UFO's and other phenomenon are crossovers, or bugs, or something intently put there as an experimental part of the game.

Without completely jumping off the turnip cart I ask, what do you know of this zany idea??

I think your thoughts are pretty sane. No weirder than any other theory.

You should listen to the audio link below. IT's really interesting, and addresses your thoughts.

Jim Elvidge
Are we Living in a Simulation, a Programmed Reality?

Red Ice Creations Radio - Jim Elvidge - Are we Living in a Simulation, a Programmed Reality?

(blurb about the interview)

Jim Elvidge, is the author of "The Universe Solved" and we'll discuss the possibility that our reality (the universe) is programmed or that we're living in a simulation. Is the concept of the Matrix possible? If we're not in a simulation then how far away are we from creating our own simulated reality? Join us for a fascinating discussion as we explore these topics and much more with Jim Elvidge Topics discussed: The developed of the theory, what other scientists and researchers have similar theories, nanotechnology, powerful computers, how can we know if we're in a simulation? We talk about the idea that we're trapped in a simulation of a previous civilizations or another race of intelligent beings, Moor's law, The Thirteenth Floor, Existence, Video Games, Nanobot's, metaphysical anomalies, Magic, UFO's, The Hive Mind, "Easter eggs" and much more. We continue our interesting discussion with Jim Elvidge and expand on the concepts of Nanobot's, nanotechnology and regulation, the singularity, artificial intelligence and more

Ok, so I know I mentioned before that I was going to make a post on this, but I wanted to find the documentary that explains it (with Michio kaku and the usual suspects) before I did. I know its on quicksilverscreen somewhere but i dont remember the name.

My interest in this theory spreang from a very young age. When I ws around 7-10, I had a dream that I was going about my life, but every so often everything I saw would go black, and then I was in a black darkened room with people looking at me. then it would flick back to the normal world. Its really hard to describe in writing, but imagine that everything you are seeing, everything you are touching right now, is not really there, and you are just in a darkened room, with people watching you. They are watching what you do in your simulation.
I'm not saying this is what happened, just a dream i had, and ever since then I have questioned what reality really is. This was long before the matrix came out, and I don't think i was imagining that i was in a computer program.

Some years later, around 1997-2000, a documentary was on TV questioning what reality is. The last 20 minutes of the show focused on the fact that computer power doubles every year (or it did roughly at the time), and therefore, within around 50 years, we might be able to reproduce our world perfectly on a computer.

Well if we were able to create a perfect simulation, wouldnt we do it many times over,... i.e. there would be millions of these simulations running, with the people in it indistinguishable from the people outside, yet their reality would seem completely real to them.

If this is the case, and there are hundreds, thousands, or millions of simulations going... wouldnt that mean that probability-wise... it is more likely that we are all in one of those simulations than the actual real world?

At that point i stopped thinking about it... because if that were to be true, we'd never find out the truth anyway so it doesnt even bare thinking about... boy thats a real mind blower...

i think we do to a degree live in a simulated reality
i tend to class the radical religious as fairly well floating in a simulated reality pertaining to all powerful invisable beings that are "there" with them.
i think we as individuals do it all the time, the balding man who lets one side grow long and then combs it over, we humans will warp reality to suit ourselves.
one day what we are doing now (net surfing for knowledge) will likely take place at a brain interface level and at great speeds, i play online video games that are simulated realitys.
its what we do
and weve been at it since the first medicine man donned animal skins and horns to re enact the hunt for the rest of the tribe.

No weirder than any other theory.

My thoughts exactly. Let's have this Elvidge fellow on to take a crack at it, and let's see if can explain some of the weirdest stuff.

Or anyone with a new explanation. More people like Tonnies or Haisch.

Evaluating claims is a chump's game that no one wins. While their novelty is entertaining in the short term, in the long term it's unsatisfying because our understanding of the phenomenon is not getting any deeper.

It's as if we are picking up one puzzle piece after another, attempting to throw some in the trash and others into the "dunno where it fits" pile. Idiots keep "re-cycling" the trash so we have to re-sort those, and none of the pieces in the "dunno" pile seem to fit each other.

So can we take a break and start thinking about the puzzle as a whole?

BTW, sorry put this thread in the wrong sub-category. I'm so used to using the "unread posts" that I didn't even think about it.

Move it if need be, sorry again.

It makes a whole lot of sense to me and even explains some of our religious traditions, the idea that 'God created Man in His own image,' for example. What do we do as soon as we get some free time on our hands? Make models. Sometimes it's just model airplanes, but sometimes we make a model railroad, and once computers had the capacity, what did we do? make Second Life. And, of course, we make lots of movies. What do we really want to do? Make the Holodeck a reality. (A 'reality' ha ha.) It appears we are programmed or compelled to do this. So there's no reason to suppose that we are the prime mover in all this. We may be in the middle.

David nor Gene have never ruled out that theory. And yes, they are aware of it. I've gotten the impression at least. In speaking, some of what they say needs to be pragmatic. Simulation theory ends up being moot when you speak from the grounds of the simulation. After all, it's what's real to us.

There's two documentaries. Either, Why are we Here, or Are we Real. My guess is, check out Are we Real.

Thanks for the movie link.

Excellent point, agreed that this is a problem if we try to use science to prove or disprove the simulation theory. Different & better modes of inquiry are needed. But notice this: that the paranormal resists scientific investigation in exactly same way that simulation theory resists scientific proof.

I see it more as the scientists resisting the paranormal, rather than the method itself not being useful in determining truths about it. I would agree that science in it's current state might fall short in explaining every possible paranormal occurrence. I agree with Sagan when he said, Science isn't perfect but it's the best we have.

I read in a Seth book once that we need a form of dream science, or science in which explores the inner reality of the mind, dreams etc. before we get a handle on what's really going on in our reality. Not sure how to go about that, but the idea intrigued me.

The previous link I posted has everything to do with simulated reality.

feedback anyone?

It's classic story, worth contemplating alongside Tippler's vision of an Omega point containing infinite computing resources. And it was written before David Deutch theorized a working quantum computer!

But the more I think about simulation theory, the less I'm sure we can assume the simulation (if that's what this is) is running on an actual computer (quantum or otherwise). I'm now wondering if the simulated nature of our reality might emerge naturally out of the vast array of parallel worlds predicted by quantum theory.

Maybe "simulation" is most useful as metaphor. For example, the "visitors" mastery over our physical reality is only partial, like video game characters working their way up through the levels but have not yet "won" the game.

That last sentence really resonates with the typical reincarnation meme that has 'us' inhabiting physical bodies 'to learn' and advance to the next level. Are we unconsciously mimicking Big 'R' Reality in the way we tend to make-up worlds in our play? Perhaps paying attention to our avocation in this regard is a communication of sorts. Remember in 'Contact' where in very advanced calculations of 'pi' recognizable patterns started showing up? The idea was that the nature of reality held clues. Maybe our demonstrated propensity to create subservient realities to our own is showing us something.

The idea was that the nature of reality held clues.

Nice, that would be an interesting path to investigate. I just finished reading Stephenson's Anathem, which explores this a bit in relation to Platonic reality.

Professor Nick G. Bocker of New Luna Health and Science University has already determined that his former theory, Cosmic Parasite Theory, has survived the scientific method and has become Law, Cosmic Parasite Law.

The universe as a hologram with all information encoded on the 2-D surface of, say, the event horizon of a black hole, is apparently taken seriously by some researchers.

It's tempting to consider if the strange beings that seem to pop into and out of our reality might be akin to "maintenance" guys at some giant theme park. Maybe they get around the park by a network of underground tunnels and stay mostly out of sight so as not to spoil the "experience". Hardly a new idea, but I find it attractive.
