My question would be are we imposing a modern mind set on an ancient object? we tend to view things through the eyes of our own age and socialization.

I opened an account to be seprate from my husband on this disscussion. so my thought on this is they repesnt some kind of insect and we are putting our own views on to the object in question but im open to the possability of this being some thing from other worlds.

The staggering thing about those little Columbian gold planes is that I had thought there was an high chance the objects just resemble modern aircraft.
Then I saw a video of an exact scale model made of wood and wouldn't you know it, it glided amazingly well. It could have flown with power. That might just be chance and again, this is not a model of an aircraft from ages ago.
But there is plenty of evidence to seriously consider it, things like having a proper lifting wing shape are hard to make when you intend to. To think of it happening by pure coincidence.....I really don't know!

That tail fin always intrigued me, there are not many examples from nature that use a horizontal wing combined with vertical tail.
The only critter i can think of is the flying fish

Ive seen models of these fly as well, amazing stuff

While I agree that it is very difficult for us to not impose our modern perspective on such an artifact, I cannot for the life of me think of anything in nature that has a delta wing and a vertical tail. All humor aside, does anyone know of any insects that could possible conform to those specifications? Or could we chalk it up to some lively imaginative creation by hunters that were aware of basic aerodynamic principles? They did use blowguns, from what I gather. Hunters didn't go to the Kmart to buy their darts, they made them. Surely at some point they tried different ideas/ designs to stabilize these darts in order to impart a more predictable flight pattern.

Me either, as i said the only critter that comes close is the flying fish, which oddly enough has the smaller wings set behind the primary ones too

Aeroplane!

@nameless - it's funny that a mate of mine who is interested in all things esoteric and very much so the history of central and south america. he showed me the intro to 'the mysterious cities of gold' and it brought back a flood of memories of watching it as a kid. he think's the cartoon's creators were major fans of mayan and other cultures.

on a different point though, if anyone has seen the large stone olmec heads it is pretty hard not to think there was some connection with africa some long time before today's accepted date. i had posted on another thread that sometime in the 90's a german toxicologist found nicotine and cocaine in the hair of an egyptian mummy. tobacco and coca being exclusive to the americas it is hard to work out how those drugs managed to cross the atlantic a very long time before it was supposedly first done?
