What is a spirit? If asked to describe in detail what your understanding is of entities known as spirits what would you say? You can include anything that you feel falls under this distinction. Angels, demons, Jin, Ghosts etc...

Although I don't necessarily believe in 'spirit' - at least maybe in the religious sense, I would define spirit as being that part of a living or deceased human being that co-exists with the body but has no physical mass itself.

From a paranormal point of view, this spirit, not being a physical thing, may exist after the biological death of the body. Perhaps this disembodied spirit can linger around and interact with the environment or use physical matter/energy to perform some functions- maybe like inhabiting an inanimate object, another living human or even something like mist or smoke or particles in a fashion that could provide a visual expression of that spirit (classic 'ghost' or 'apparition').

Of course I have just written all that off the top of my head and in no way am I even pretending to have any evidence for any of it being correct!

You asked - I answered!:p

Since we have no tangible record of an actual spirits existence. I'm referring to the folkloric "spirit. The term is used rather loosely throughout different religions and cultures.

When I think of that folkloric spirit tradition I also think about hauntings and the notion that a disembodied spirit is somehow tied to a geographic location that could be a house or a larger piece of land. These "spirits" seem to be replaying past events that have some type of drama or trauma associated with said geography. I don't buy into spirit contact in any way, ouija boards, crystal ball sceance stuff. So for me the "spirit" may be something more like a holographic recording that loops every now and then, as opposed to having a distinct personality or direct connection to a former living consciousness. It would not surprise me to know that people who are aware of these past dramas may be contributing agents to the transparent playback.

The whole angel, demon, djinn thing has more to do with poetry and traditional tall tales than anything otherworldly IMHO.

I've noticed that recently a number of "A Haunting" style shows are popping up on cable TV. The few I've bothered to check out don't have the dramatic "house exorcism" at the end that solves the families problems- but there must be a large audience out there for this type of drama. I watched the first couple seasons of SY SY's "Paranormal Witness" and they had several decent tales, until this past season. Seems every episode was that "A Haunting" style drama. Very disappointing.

Great responses as usual. I've always had a problem with the idea of a "ghost" being representation of someone who was once living. If that's the case, the person didn't die at all they just transitioned to another state of being, and wouldn't have anymore reason to harm a person as they did when they were alive. Stagger Lee you didn't give your definition.

When I hear the word spirit, It reminds me of "A Christmas Carol" and how Scroodge addresses the 3 ghosts visiting him. I grew up Catholic and the word is often used to describe the trinity, or father, son, and holy spirit.
My own definition? If human body contains energy, and energy cannot be destroyed- it is my opinion that at the time of death we transform. Consciousness survives. In what form, I couldn't guess. Perhaps the galaxy, universe, is populated with planets full of intelligent life, and we, as spirits, are able to reincarnate and experience many different worlds.

I think it's all about the viewing public trying to recapture the way they felt the first time they saw The Exorcist, The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist. Everyone's still looking for a quality jolt from a disembodied spirit, or a disturbing case of evil possession. These shows keep trying to capture a good hard bump in the night but instead all you get is soft simulation.

Interesting, so maybe Aliens are human spirits that have transformed. That's one I hadn't heard, but then I haven't heard much.

Well, I'm rambling on a bit, but you might be interested in some of the more devious speculation out there- in that perhaps our saucer friends are uploading our consciousness at the time of our death, for their own purposes. I'm not familiar with all the specifics, but their are some who don't expect such a thing would be in our individual benefit- such as a reanimation process where our "awareness" is transfered into a biological being for the purpose of say, populating some other goldilocks planet paradise. It's been a while, but I recall W Streiber rambling about a connection between these "grey's" being our own deceased? Alot of speculation, that's for sure.

Spirits you say.. yep I believe in them

what's Ben Riach like?

smoky with a nice port finish.. it is not sweet and has a very mellow edge.... Get a bottle and try it out for yourself.
Love my scotch and these days is the only thing I drink.. don't drink very much these days anyway.
