Steven Spielbergs 'Taken'

There is no spoon
Since the thread on Signs seemed to start up such heated conversation, I thought i'd start a thread on Taken.
What did people think of this?

I personally loved the series, its one of my favourite of all time. I thought it gave a really fitting explanation of what an alien races agenda might be.
It also had a real feel good factor, and Owen Crawford was absolutely brilliant as a bad guy

Never seen it. Is it new or old programme

Hey mate :)

Oh man you have to see it!! Its a series with 7 or so episodes in it, each one is i think about an hour and a half (its been about six months since i watched it last).
Its a dramatisation, but it ties in closely with real events htat have happened. For example i think the first episode starts off with the roswell event, and the odd character will have similar names as a tribute to the real life people.
its all about alien abductions and stuff. Its not just the UFO storyline that makes it good though. I first watched it years before I was interested in UFO's and its got some brilliant characters in it.
Here's the amazon link to it, check it out some time.

Thanks for the info Hoff.

I loved that Geeky actor I forget his name but he was the voice behind Max Headroom and he also acted in the Dawn of the Dead remake. He was great as that government agent.

I like the Owen Crawford character also.

Heh, yeah he was really really good also!
Dakota Fanning was a brilliant actress as well as she can't have been much older than 7 or 8 at the time i dont think.

I liked it to, as entertainment.

I thought it gave a really fitting explanation of what an alien races agenda might be.

Really. What do you mean?

It also had a real feel good factor, and Owen Crawford was absolutely brilliant as a bad guy

Agreed. Although I wonder if it's right to characterize his character as a "bad" guy. Why do you think of him as "bad"?

Just as in the agenda of mixing the human gene pool up to create a superior being, its a nice idea imo

If I recall correctly, the aliens were trying to create a hybrid to regain emotion and/or their sense of "empathy". They had lost it.

In the movie [series], what did the human race get out of the arrangement?

Well he kills that woman in the caravan, and then shoots his wife in the back later... so that reasonably mean.

Ugh, yeah I forgot about that. Murder = Bad Guy.

I can't recall the caravan scene.

Entertainment, perhaps an Oscar.

If I recall correctly (my memory is really fuzzy), wasn't there some "promise" that Dakota's character would return one day, and solve all human problems with her magical abilities?

I hope she instills in them an understanding of humanities legal system, since when they return I think a few abductees are going to introduce them to torts. :D

It was cheesey B rated bad science fiction at it's most cliche'd.

All the press and talk and commercials in the months before it aired made it look like Spielberg was going to make something like a docu-drama based on actual claims and possibly some "critical thinking" about the whole abduction phenomena.

Instead, we got a pure fantasy (without an ounce of reality) heaping with bad drama and tabloid prepetuating bullshit that makes any halfway serious researcher cringe. I kept waiting for "Bat-Boy" to make his appearance.

Yeah, I'm gonna hear TV only airs what makes money, blah blah blah,......but that's not what pissed me off.

It was the media coverage leading up to it's airing. It led me and a few others I know to think it was going to be something serious, something that might get people to stop and go "Hmmmm" ....when it turned out to be a steaming pile of horse shit.

I guess it was my mistake for thinking the media might, just might, do the subject a tinsy weensy bit of good. That's what I get for thinking I suppose.

I wonder if a thread on what the media can do to improve itself in this regard would be worthwhile.....or even entertaining....?

I think you're being a bit hard on it exo_doc. I thought it was just "okay" when it first aired and didn't live up to the hype. But recently when it was rerun on SPACE I found it interesting as a sort of condensed, dramatized history of all the UFO lore to date. I was impressed by the even-handedness of the series, never stating that they knew for sure what the aliens were or where they came from.

Things started to go off the rails a bit from episode six onwards but that's where the historical aspect dropped away in favour of the drama. Also a large departure from existing lore since in all stated encounters with hybrids to date they usually end up being taken away because they "can't survive on earth".

what did the human race get out of the arrangement?

Nothing. Alley left her star behind as a signal to her mom that she hoped to return someday but otherwise nothing.

That would be Canada's own Matt Freuer.
