Strange ISS Pass

Foolish Earthling
My son and I just observed the ISS make a pass along the northwestern to northeastern skies here from western North Carolina.
For the first time I have ever seen, there was a very visible cloud around it making look like a comet.
I know they are trying to repair a urine collector, and maybe they had just discharged some waste or something creating a trailing cloud, but it was eerie to see. It made me think maybe they were losing atmosphere or something.
Has anyone else witnessed this before? Or is there another reason for the comet-like halo?
