Superman: Man of Steel

Hmmm, the trailer doesn't really give you too much to go on. I'm definitely interested to see how this movie turns out. I like Snyder's style of directing so I have high hopes for this movie, I thought what he did with Watchmen was pretty awesome. I'll tell you one thing though, enough movies have been made with Superman as Mr. Nice Guy, I want to see pissed off, red eyed Superman kicking ass and taking names. I'd also like to see him fight someone from the comics that isn't Lex Luthor, maybe Doomsday, Black Adam or Brainiac, or anyone but the same old, typical take on Lex Luthor that's in every movie.

By putting the writing and production crew of the Batman series behind it, "Man of Steel," will likely be a grittier take on the Superman legend. That's obvious from the teaser trailer. It appears that the villain will be General Zod, but you won't hear him say, "kneel before Zod." Only Terence Stamp could pull that off.

It wasn't very obvious to me from the teaser, seemed more like Superman as troubled teenager, which isn't exactly what I'd call gritty. General Zod though, huh? Interesting, gonna check out IMDB to see who's playing him.

Michael Shannon is playing Zod, I like him, he was great in Boardwalk Empire and his performance in The Runaways was pretty amazing. As an aside, I just finished watching the new Spiderman movie and have to say it was pretty good, better than the first one in my opinion. Hopefully this new Superman flick is just as good.

so, does this have anything to do with the other superman film from about six years ago?
"Superman Returns"? No. Bryan Singer's take on Superman was meant as a sequel to "Superman II," considered the best of the Christopher Reeve movies. It was as if the later two sequels were never made (which is a good thing, since "Superman III" and "Superman IV" weren't very good.)

Brandon Routh's performance as Clark Kent/Superman was basically an imitation of Reeve (his career hasn't gone very far since), and the plotting was consistent with the earlier films. In passing, I thought that Kevin Spacey made a more believable Lex Luthor than Gene Hackman, who was way over the top.

"Man of Steel" is the full reboot, and its certainly meant to offer a more realistic portrayal of the character. You can sense that from the casting, and the preview trailer. So there is Jor-El, and the Kents, and young Kal-El's experiences on Earth and his struggles to become Superman.

And, quoting Zach Snyder, the director of "Man of Steel": “The big challenge is, if you can make people feel, ‘What would you do if you were Superman?’ That’s what we went after. A lot of times in the past, Superman has been this big blue Boy Scout up on a throne that nobody can really touch.”
