Peter Jackson and Costa Botes put one together back in the 90's called Forgotten Silver, about a supposed pioneering New Zealand film maker. When I realised it was a hoax I burst out laughing (especially since it featured a set of very convenient coincidences, and played heavily on our national pride/smugness - mine included), but some people were very much not amused: as we all know, people who take themselves too seriously hate being made to look foolish. But anyway, that's definitely one of my favourites.

You should catch Jeremy's if you haven't seen it already. It's a bit of a laugh at least. UFOlogy desperately needs a sense of the ridiculous, if only to deflate the never-ending stream of self-important jackassses making money out of spouting any old shit to the multitudes who never, ever ask themselves "is this likely?".
