Current vaccinations do not work for the swine flu. I think that local government raction to this outbreak has been measured and reasonable. We've seen some of the documents from local authorities posted here. What they all basically say is 'Don't panic. Take precautions in terms of your own hygiene, and we're on it." Even if you look at the CDC web site, where there is vastly more information, they are not saying the sky is falling.

Where we are seeing some panic is in the population itself. If some kid in a school gets the flu, they're likely to close the school down. I think this is more precautionary of lawsuits than anything else. Locally we had one parent saying, 'Well, my kid has cystic fibrosis and a weak immune system, so he can't afford to be exposed, therefore you must close.' In my local library the librarians felt 'disrespected' because they were not given the brand of cleaner they wanted for the reference desk. In Egypt they began slaughtering pigs in the mistaken belief that you might get 'swine flu' from swine. That's why the authorities are no longer calling it swine flu because people actually believe you can get it by eating pork.

Of course, it remains to be seen what will happen this next week if the government believes its super-computer modeling of a pandemic, but so farlocal authorities, especially, are behaving appropriately. I see no evidence of conspiracy, 'psy ops,' or any other nefarious deeds here. So far the stupidity has been seen from the over-reaction of the population itself, helped along, as usual, from the sensationalistic news media.
