The Apple Mothership will Land

And make sure you're running Snow Leopard now. If you still have 10.5 (Leopard), you'll have to buy two upgrades to get one.

I'm totally up to date. Looking forward to the iCloud and iOS 5.
I may be coming into some extra money because of a pay equity thing our government has organized, so an iPad may be purchased in the near future as well. Apple is making some awesome stuff. And now they'll have a space ship too!

I'm far from an Apple fan, but it's cool to see that an American company is doing well enough to build something like this in todays economy. I liked his polite brush off on the request for free wi-fi.

Well, you'll get no argument from me about Alienware. My laptop is an M15X. But I'd hardly call OSX "less sophisticated", it's very refined and Apple hardware is top shelf stuff. I've also got an older Macbook, ('bout 4 years old or so) and I've owned several other Apples over the years.

I just dislike their marketing style, and I believe they're still overpriced even though they do use high quality everything in their machines. And contrary to popular belief, they don't "just work". I've had my share of sad macs, crashes, and random hardware problems with them over the years. They're complicated machines like all computers are and they have their own share of problems just like the rest. And my Macbook gets so damned hot it'll almost burn your lap.

The first generation MacBook (2006) was prone to run hot, but Apple released several firmware updates, affecting the cooling fans, which largely reduced the problem. As to pricing: If you compare Apples and Apples, meaning the equipment, software package, OS (Windows Ultimate is the only fair comparison to Mac OS X, since it's the only version with all the features), you'll see Macs are mostly comparably priced. When it comes to total cost of ownership, Macs are invariably cheaper.

Stop the spin. Other than that recent bout of scareware, there haven't been much in the way of Mac viruses since the 1990s, and none were as virulent as the typical Windows virus.

If you understood anything about Unix and the layout of Mac OS X, you'd understand what it's all about. But I'm just not impressed with your knowledge of the subject.

Don't know about that Gene, but they have their place. My Macbook is a 2006 model. I guess I got one of the bad ones. Regardless, the same basic issues have been around for years.
The Alienware I'm posting this from is faster and more feature-loaded than any Apple in it's price range and it can do nifty things that no Apple laptop can do at any price. (User configurable backlight color, etc) Also, due to lack of software support because of the small market share, I'd have to set any Apple machine up for dual-boot and buy Windows 7 if I wanted to do any gaming. The Apple just won't do everything a PC will do without installing Windows. The reverse isn't true, so that's another strike at the cost of ownership idea.

And desktops are worlds away. I can build a desktop out of premium components that is faster and cheaper (by BIG bucks) with more storage space every time.

Same basic problems? No way? Faster? Depends on the hardware setup. Sounds to me as if your Mac experiences are based on one 2006 entry-level model.

Let's take this discussion to our tech forum, OK?

I've had 6 macs since 1980, Gene. And a Newton. You're a Mac guy, I'm just a computer guy.
Tech forum it is for any further discussion.

Semantics. OK, I started with an Apple II.
Mac people.:p

Since I helped derail this thread, I suppose I'd better help put it back on track.
So how about that new Apple campus? It looks like just about everybody is going to have a window with a view. One thing about Apple I really appreciate is their design team and attention to detail. Looks like they brought that philosophy into their blueprints. That is one gorgeous plan.

Though, I do feel sorry for the poor guys who are going to be stuck in the old campus once they get that built. The Apple employee equivalent of being "left behind" after the rapture.;)

I went to the tech forum and I could not find where you guys were discussing this.
Anyway, I don't get the whole "I hate Macs" mentality. A computer is a computer. Which one you use comes down to preference. Windows 7 is so far ahead of any other Windows OS that I actually don't hate using my work PC anymore like I used to when I had Windows XP. At home, I have OS X because that's my preference. I like the way the iLife programs work together. Also, I'm not sure what people are doing with their Macs that they manage to get an actual virus.

So here's a link to Apple's proposed new office space. It looks like a spaceship.

It's interesting that our first response to this building is that it looks like a spaceship, even though no spaceship (that we know about) built by humans has ever looked anything like this. Only in fiction and UFO sightings do we see this shape.

It the pop culture idea of a space ship.
