Sub says it all. What is the best movie you've seen in the past year? I'm asking this cause I just watched a film that completely blew my socks off.

The Orphanage.

It's a Spanish language "horror" film subtitled in English. Co-Produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by J. A. Bayona his first major film!

I know sub titles can be a turn off for some but this film is superb. There were a couple of scenes that I actually stood up and hollered..My god,Hitchcock! Its much more than just your run of the mill horror film. This is the horror film for people who don't like horror films. ;)

Interested in knowing what movie really made a impact on you all in the past year or so. Only one will suffice.

I know some hated it, but I really Liked Benjamin Button.
I loved the new Harry Potter as well.

On the other side of the coin:

I watched a movie that got good reviews called Happy Go Lucky and wanted to F'ing poke my brain out with knitting needles and a fire poker. What a piece of shit that was.

I've only seen a few this past year because the theater going experience is so miserable these days in America (FYI when I lived in New Zealand for a year, never had any problems ever)

Definitely the most fun/enjoyable experience was Star Trek.

By far the worst, most vile thing I've seen in years was Transformers 2. Only saw it because a buddy worked on it.

But the BEST film I saw was Aliens.. he he since I watch at least twice a year on average.. never gets old..

Ive been meaning to watch that movie "The Orphanage" for ages now! After seeing "Pans Labyrinth" I wanted to see more of that director.

Thanks for reminding me! Glad to hear its good.

"The Orphanage" is a great movie, but if you want to watch Guillermo del Toro go and find "The Devil's Backbone" ...now!

I literally watch a couple of movies a week. Mostly horror or scifi. Have to agree that 2009 has been somewhat of a drought when it comes to good movies. I enjoyed Star Trek and Lesbian Vampire Killers was pretty funny.

Del Torro is currently working on 'The Hobbit.' Should be cool.
I just watched one recently, a Spanish film, called 'Time Crimes' that completely surprised me with its' brilliant script. One of the best time-travel movies ever. If I had to pick the best I've seen in the last year, and trust me it's not for everyone, it would probably be Terry Gilliam's 'Tideland.'

Just watched Downfall - excellent movie! The whole time though the inner paranormal geek in me kept thinking about The Nazi Bell and all the other esoteric advanced weapons they were working on..

Scary to think how different world history might have been if Hitler had not driven out the Jewish scientists working in Germany at that time or had not gone insane or suffered such megalomania at the end (i.e. attempting operation Barbarossa)

I really liked Wall-E, and on David's recommendation The Man From Earth.
If you guys like Spanish horror films check out La Cabina,

Frightened the life out of me, not exactly horror but if you see it you will know what I mean. Also though I saw it more than a year ago Old Boy, is pretty damn good,

Guess I have a problem with confinement.

I hear ya PhantomAce, Watchmen, hands down, It put such a gritty, realistic face on 'superheroes', the genre, and still manages to ask some really philosopical questions.
District 9 looks pretty deadly too.

Subtitles a turn off? huh? I guess should stop watching almost every movie I watch then. Seriously, subtitles don't bother me at all. If anything, it adds to the dramatic (or comedic) effect. Oh well, to each his own. I'm also extremely tired of Hollywood and enjoy learning about different cultures through film.

Thanks for the tip on this one. I'll definitely check it out. The last Spanish movie I watched was also a horror, and good. It's called "[Rec]" (2007) and is about a young TV reporter and her cameraman who cover the night shift at the local fire station... weird shit happens.

I thought Watchmen sucked. Downfall was very good.

Have a couple of friends who won't watch subtitled films for reasons being they don't want to read and watch a movie. I tried to explain what they were missing but to no avail. Their loss.

Yes Downfall is a superb film...have you seen "Sophie Scholl – The Final Days"? Another fine German movie based on the White Rose resistance movement in Munich during WW2.

Best movie ever. Ever. Netflix has it.

IMDB has this at a solid 4.0/10- LOL. I'll seek it out, thanks. :)
