Introduction
The UFO phenomenon is real. It has a physical component (e.g., ground traces, radar confirmation) but also has psychological impacts (e.g., experience of missing time, strange beings). The latter tend to put serious researchers off from investigating the issue. Given that the physical evidence is so strong it could it be that the psychological (strange) side is deliberate in order to maintain the status quo position of ‘nothing happening here, move on people’. Certainly the evidence for the physical reality cannot be denied. There is also a clear pattern of military (especially nuclear weapons) incursions. And UFO’s are often sighted as Unidentified Sea Objects (USO’s).
When close encounters are multi-witnessed then they are undeniable, especially when the witnesses are separate from one another and do not know each other. Given the impact on witnesses of close encounters (distress, PTSD) it cannot be accepted as moral and ethical for them to be told that nothing happened. Therefore the UFO community finds itself in a similar situation to the gay rights community before the latter attained acceptance and understanding. Society needs to change its position towards those that have had a close encounter and find a way to understand what they have been through.
This paper provides some of the best evidence for the reality of the multiple witness UFO close encounter. We focus on the pattern that has been established thus demonstrating with crystal clarity that the phenomenon is real. And we conclude with a call for society to change its attitude towards the close encounter experiencer and to accept what they have been through as (in some way) ‘real’.
IDEAL CASE:
* Close Encounter

* Witnessed entering or exiting water (USO)
In this paper we regard the following as equating to ‘psychological reality’.
* Missing Time (or condensed time) (intriguing when the experiencers physical watch is effected)
* Beings are seen (since Betty and Barny Hill’s abduction experience they have been called aliens or ET’s)
The issue of Physical and Psychological Reality concerning close encounter witnesses/abductees
Whatever the mix is between physical and psychological reality hardly matters. This is because, in this context, both are real anyway. Something is ‘real’ to the extent that it is experienced as real. In the close encounter the experience is ‘real’ irrespective of which part is physical and which part is psychological.
The physical aspects are the easiest to deal with. Ground traces, radiation readings, radar blips, and the impacts on physical instruments such as watches and car engines are all easy to measure and understand. But notice that it is the craft that leave all of the physical evidence. The ET’s themselves are therefore often suspected of non-existence at the physical level. However they are experienced as being as real as the craft. Indeed they are experienced as so real that abductees often suffer post-traumatic-stress disorder. (PTSD). Therefore, the beings are a psychological reality and psychological reality has as much value and as much reality as physical reality when it is experienced as being as real as physical reality. Physical and psychological reality are blurred in the close encounter. We can say that, in abduction cases, psychological reality gets promoted in terms of its ‘value’.
There is both a PHYSICAL component to the UFO phenomenon and a PATTERN to it.

It may seem hard to believe that people can be won over to accepting that the UFO phenomenon is real. However the opposite is true. It has long been said that when people are exposed to the UFO literature they almost always change their mind. This theory was put to the test in 2013 when 6 former members of Congress who either rejected or were agnostic about UFO’s were exposed to the actual data. All 6 moved from their previous scepticism to far greater acceptance. 21And the prominent Ufologist, Stanton Friedman, says that a talk he gave to Canadian journalists in Saint John, Brunswick caused the attitudes of the journalists to change because “Attendees had no idea there was so much solid information, as opposed to the tabloid nonsense they thought was the primary source of UFO data”. 22In our internet age I would add “online nonsense” to “tabloid nonsense”. Also, Dr. Peter Sturrock polled the membership of the American Astronomical Society and discovered that “the greater the amount of time one spent reading UFO-related material, the more likely one is to accept their reality”. 23These findings demonstrate that the UFO phenomenon is not only real but that it can also be seen to be real by collective society.
