Having lived through the years before and during Apollo, I have always found the shift in awareness experienced by so many of the Apollo astronauts to be downright mysterious. As far as I know, nothing as profound occurs in astronauts who go no further than low earth orbit. Or maybe I have missed something.

As a partial explanation, I would suggest more high time pilots have a hidden mystical side than is generally known. No stats to prove this, of course. But indeed, many if not most of the Apollo astronauts returned fundamentally changed at very deep levels and I'm not sure we know why.
