Curiously Confused
That weird post by Lavarat reminded me of somthing funny. It has always made me laugh to myself that Lazar and others referred to the super secret lab just outside the main Groom lake base as "S4".
In military parlance, "S4" is the designation for the base or Battalion Logistics office. Specfically it is used to describe the officer in charge of Logistics but can mean the office logistics are run out of. By Logistics I mean water, food, ammunition, fuel, gear, and a means to transport it all. Troop tranportation to and from places is sometimes also handled through the office.
So, every base has an "S4" as it would also be listed as the destination for all logistics flowing into a base. For instance, a shipment of toilet paper would be designated for delivery to the base S4.
I even heard a guy once talk about other "S" facilities like "S7" or something. Here is a quick rundown for any that care to know.
The "S" is an element designator and stands for "Staff Role" and the number designates the function.
1 = Personnel
2 = Intel
3 = Operations
4 = Logistics
5 = Strategic Planning (had to look this one up)
6 = Information Technology
7 = Training
8 = Accounting and Finance
9 = CIMC (Civilian Military Co-operation Cell -- Also had to look this one up)
S7 would mean the training office. Its just funny. Anyway.... So I am sure that the Groom Lake base's S4 and S7 got a real kick out of that.
