I have been told by people who were in Libya at the time of the Benghazi attack that Ambassador Stevens was assassinated by the U.S. State Department because he expressed reservations about the U.S. program to arm Al Qaeda mercenaries in Syria with third-generation shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles (MPADS).
Stevens feared the weapons would be used to take down civilian airliners. The State Department feared he was about to blow the whistle on this weapons program, so he had to go.
Witnesses who live in the area report that a car load of "white men" in an embassy car left the facility immediately before the attack. The car was stopped at the armed cordon set up around the facility, but was let through.
The meme you see in the alternative media asserting that the State Department burned its fingers playing with fire by hiring Al Qaeda mercenaries as security is a smoke screen designed to conceal what actually happened.
If proof of this thesis ever comes out, I suspect it will be in the form of documentation showing which officials were inside the facility, but who managed to "escape" immediately before the attack began. The documentation could be entry/exit records, surveillance video, or discrepancies in the narratives provided by the employees who were there.
It will be interesting to see if such evidence emerges in the coming years, as it often quietly does.
