The U.S. vs John Lennon

King of Mars
Lennon was long before my time, but the lyrics to this song blew my mind first time I heard it:

Working Class Hero

As soon as your born they make you feel small,
By giving you no time instead of it all,
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all,

A working class hero is something to be,
A working class hero is something to be.

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school,
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool,
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules,

A working class hero is something to be,
A working class hero is something to be.

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years,
Then they expect you to pick a career,
When you can't really function you're so full of fear,

A working class hero is something to be,
A working class hero is something to be.

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV,
And you think you're so clever and classless and free,
But you're still fucking peasents as far as I can see,

A working class hero is something to be,
A working class hero is something to be.

There's room at the top they are telling you still,
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill,
If you want to be like the folks on the hill,

A working class hero is something to be.
A working class hero is something to be.

If you want to be a hero well just follow me,
If you want to be a hero well just follow me.

John Lennon was shot dead on the evening of 8 December 1980 by Mark Chapman, from Texas. He later said that "voices in his head" had told him to kill Lennon.
I wander was something even more sinister than a lone nut at play... What's everyone's opinion on this?

Anyway, here's The U.S. vs John Lennon

"A documentary on the life of John Lennon, with a focus on the time in his life when he transformed from a musician into an antiwar activist."

FBI, J Edgar Hoover, Nixon, etc.

I have little doubt that his murder was a hit. Funny, this thread pops up...I woke up at about 4:00 this morning and turned on the radio and 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun' was playing. He also saw a UFO on my birthday. Most peculiar Mama.

John Lennon's UFO Sighting

I saw the last Blind Melon performance with Shannon Hoon.

Hey, guys.

Nice topic, and synchronicity is at play here with me, too. I'm on Swaptree and just received an email today stating that I'll be getting the DVD "Imagine" for a foreign film I offered up. I'm also heading up to MD to see McCartney at RFK at the end of the month. I'm a big fan of the Beatles and the music of that era.

I think that his murder simply was what it was. Lennon made himself pretty accessible during his lifetime. I remember my uncle and his hippie friends driving from MD to NY back in the day to visit him (he got a glimpse). Nixon's disgraced exit from the political stage helped dilute the controversies he had with Lennon, I think. But man, it was great theater.

Lennon had actually "quieted down" quite a bit during his self-imposed 5 year hiatus to take care of Sean and record "Double Fantasy," so I'm not sure what a "hit" would have accomplished.

I would love to have seen what Lennon would have contributed to the "MTV" era.

Thanks for the topic, guys.

Hey, guys.

I think that his murder simply was what it was.
Maybe, maybe not. There is little doubt that "The Man" was terrified of the disruptive effects his message would have on this silly capitalist oligarchy we all grew up in.
