I am not normally one for petitions but some times they are the only way to get voices heard.
"Authoritarian regimes are pushing for governmental control over the internet in a binding global treaty. If they succeed, the internet could become less open, more costly and much slower. We've stopped threats like this before, and we can again -- but only with a massive global outcry."

I see a petition, but no evidence that this in any way impacts the modern industrialized world, such as the U.S., Canada, UK, Spain, Germany, Italy, or that there's any potential impact. Anyone can make a statement or claim and start a petition. But the petition needs to have a factual basis. What, for example, do they mean by "authoritarian regimes"? Egypt, Syria, Iran? What would you expect from them and how would anyone's petition stop them.

Sorry Gene I put that up in a hurry before I went to work and thought people would find it interesting.

It is for people to read and make up their own minds on the subject, with the UN now getting involved in how the internet is run I would not be so sure that in the long run things will not change for us as a whole.

But having said that this is not a direct threat such as PIPA, SOPA, ACTA etc were. The trans Pacific Partnership could hold some changes for us as well that we may not like (but I have not personally read to deep into that as yet).

From my own personal point of view I support any and all efforts to keep the internet free as far as the transfer of ideas and information is concerned.
However there is a need for policing (that is a given), but it is where we draw the line that matters and I do not think I need to explain this if you understand why many of us opposed the aforementioned attempts.

The obscure threat to the internet you need to know about - Index on Censorship

I don't know that a petition would accomplish anything. First world countries are not in support of the changes to the ITRs, and the countries who are in support of it are in support of it to ensure a tighter grip on the communications freedoms of their people.

Hence why I say I do not normally support them... Online petitions really do little if anything and I think we all know this. Boots on the ground is what gets a point out and acts as a force for change for people not digital signatures.

either way I believe in awareness of what is going on even if I do not support a particular movement I like to know about them etc... the name of the game is information and the more you have the clearer the picture becomes.

China's gonna do what China's gonna do. Besides, this stuff wouldn't likely impact the first world.

I enjoyed reading the article you posted and, subsequently, the one I found. Thanks for the information.

That is all it is really about just being informed... All we need to do is keep our eyes open that is all.

I thank you too stoney and might I add, a very clever thread title. it took a few minutes for it to sink in, initially I thought there was an expletive involved.
