I played synthesizer in bands all through the '80s and '90s and had a fairly successful pop-metal band in Colorado from '92-'96, Laffing Buddha. I've seen countless bands since the early '70s and I must say the most jaw-droppingly impressive live acts of the bunch were PFloyd, Peter Gabriel and KCrimson. Back when I was wilder, woolier & younger (HS) I was a huge Zep head. Attended the notorious Seattle '73 show the night of the infamous "mud-shark/groupie" episode, '75 Seattle + the NYC Garden show (Song Remains the Same show). But a short list of my favorite harder bands from the original British Metal invasion would have to include Deep Purple, Sabbath, the Who, Pink Floyd, Ziggy period Bowie, Cream, Jimmy Miller-era Stones + others. I never went for the new wave of British metal except Aussies AC/DC. Oh, and maybe Lemmie and the boys, and the Irish lads--Thin Lizzy & Horselips. US artists would include #1 Hendrix, Aerosmith, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, James Gang, Billion $ Baby-era Alice Cooper--later Satriani, Stevie Vai, some Metallica, + a few others.  When I got into college my tastes went more prog rock: Genesis, Yes, Gabriel, Zappa, Nektar, UK (w/ Alan Holdsworth), reformed King Crimson (w/ Adrian Belew), Kraftwerk, etc Later in the late '70s I explored punkier bands like the Stooges, the Ramones, the Clash, the Police, Sinceros, Lena Lovitch, Nina Hagan, XTC, etc -- these lists could go on and on...
