There are few things that wind my clock more than an ungrateful government when it comes to health care for military veterans. Speaking very frankly, most of the ungrateful bastards never served anyway ... and benefit from the sacrifices of others. So when I saw this today ... I couldn't believe "my lying eyes!" I don't know about any of you but this simply fries my ass. Thank you Democratic Party.

Wounded Warriors Face New Tax This Independence Day

From John Kartch and Ryan Ellis on Friday, July 2, 2010 12:51 PM

As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day with parades and barbecues, America’s veterans face a new tax on prosthetic limbs and other vital medical devices.

The health care overhaul passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama earlier this year contains a new tax on medical devices such as prosthetic limbs, pacemakers, and wheelchairs. This tax, which its proponents claim will raise $20 billion over the next ten years, contains no exemption for the nation’s 22 million veterans. In fact, Senate Democrats specifically refused to exempt veterans from the tax.

On March 24 2010, Senate Democrats rejected an amendment offered by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) to the healthcare bill. This amendment (SA 3644) would have prevented the medical device tax from hitting veterans covered by the Veterans Healthcare Program or TRICARE for Life. This amendment was rejected by a vote of 44-54. All but five Democrat senators voted in favor of retaining the tax for veterans.

The medical device tax was one of over twenty new or higher taxes in President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul. This permanent new tax is being collected now.

“On March 24, Senate Democrats had the opportunity to exempt our veterans from Obamacare’s new tax on medical devices such as prosthetic limbs. But 54 Democrats voted against the measure. They chose to side with the tax-and-spend crowd in Washington over our wounded warriors,”said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. “This is one of the many reasons Harry Reid and the Democrats did not want Americans to read the 2,500 page health care bill before it was passed.”

In addition to those who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Department of Veterans Affairs reports the following number of veterans from America’s wars:

World War II: 2,079,000

Korean War: 2,507,000

Vietnam War: 7,569,000

Desert Shield/Storm: 2,254,000

The following senators voted for the tax:

Republicans are no better than Democrats, and attempting to blame only Democrats is a bit unfair.

I would not be tricked into thinking the Republican Party is much better.

How many Repubes did you see vote for that above Sport?

Forget the blame now. All of America is to blame if this isn't rectified. Effectively we say to these people, "Hey thanks for loosing a limb or two for your country. We really appreciate that. So.... to get you meds, checkups, supplies, devices, and counseling you need to run on down to your nearest VA hospital. The wait is usually only about 14 hours. The doctors and staff rarely give a shit and your sure to contract something else while waiting. Oh, and here is an invoice. You'll need to have that paid before we can release your meds. Good luck soldier and God Bless!"

It's criminal to treat those soldiers that way. There is no other word for it.

It makes me sick how our governments treat our veterans.

I'm of the mind that no civil servant, elected or otherwise should receive benefits or pay exceeding that which is earned by the lowest paid soldier serving anywhere. Full Stop. End of Story.

No civil servant or politician deserves pay in excess of what we pay our soldiers and veterans. Not one.

Thanks for posting this Don.

Good to know what the "Lawmakers" think of the guys out there voluntarily risking life and limb for the sake of our country. One word comes to my mind: Un-fucking-believable. I'd trade my life for any one of those kids that have lost theirs serving their country and proudly wearing the uniform.

I'll be passing this on through email to a few friends. Perhaps we can get a grass roots campaign started to repeal this shameful law.

Not knowing the full story behind this particular piece of legislation, it sounds as if the Republicans are objecting because its funding is not being properly provided, as opposed to taking issue with its underlying goals. There are plenty of circumstances where, on the surface, a piece of legislation advocates the right principles but when you get into the details, it presents a myriad of problems.

The situation at Fort Hood and their alleged Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic is appalling. I can't lay hands on the video report I saw recently on it but someone else's google super-powers might find it.

Here is an article that talks about the less than stellar Fort Hood medical situation. You would think that the officers would not stand for this type of thing being perpetrated on their men. What happened to never leave a man behind? It should apply once you get them back home as well.
