UFO for lack of a better desciption/word.

Just to set the scene, last Sunday myself and my girlfriend were dropping one of my work colleagues back to his house. Its about 20km out of my town which is a small rural town situated at the base of a mountain which is at the end of a good 80km stretch of ranges. Most of the land around is paddock and farm land and any big city is an hour and a half drive in any direction.

Anyhow, after dropping my mate of at his place the missus and i were heading back and driving along a strip of road that had paddocks to the left and a strip of trees following the road on the right with paddocks behind the trees. Funnily enough we had been having a bit of jibber jabber about the moon and space and stuff in the moments before the experience.

Out of nowhere, the trees on the right turned a real deep intense vibrant blue which seeped through and literally saturated the light from the high beams on the car. I looked to my right and through the trees i saw what i can only describe as a blue fireball minus the flames in basically complete 45 degree angle freefall at about 50-100m distance and more or less parrallel with and heading in the same direction as the car. Next thing it is gone.

This all happened in a matter of seconds.

To clarify a few things, this thing had some serious speed, for the second i saw it, it was f**kin tearing along. In terms of height, it was about tree level when i saw it and i lost it at mid tree. So, i assume it "appeared" about twice the height of the trees as to when we first saw the light through the trees and not the actual "fireball". I was astounded at how bright this thing was for how deep and intense of a colour it was, if that makes sense. Its size was hard to judge but it was fairly damn big, i'll think about that part more. I also recall seeing orange on it somewhere but cant be certain although my gf said she seen orange at the back of it.

After this had happened we were both kinda like "ahhh wtf just happened" the difference being my gf was literally frozen in fear behind the wheel with myself next her going "get ready for the engine to cut out and the car switching off" haha. My heart was in my throat though.

It was like something out of a movie, how you see meteors hitting the earth. Just a massive blue ball of fire plasma looking like it was about to smash into the ground. I dont recall the exact moment that i lost sight of it but im 100% certain if it hit the ground we would have known about it. It was although someone switched on a light then turned it off. Cause, if this thing came all the way from the sky im sure everything would have slowly lit up blue yet it was more instaneous its there and then its gone.

Similar to staring directly at a welding arc, except the brightness doesn't make your eyes squint? Did you notice if there were afterimages or not?

Yeah thats exactly right, i didnt have to squint at all to look at it. I dont recall seeing any afterimages.

Interesting.

Have you heard of the Kelly Cahill encounter? It happened in Victoria... you werent anywhere near here?

I'm in Dunkeld, Vic. It's at the end of the "The Grampians" mountain ranges. Melbourne is about 3 hours drive East. I've heard of that encounter before but thanks for posting.

Interesting. Not an exact match, but enough similarity to the Needles incident to make one think.

Here are some reported details of the Needles, CA crash in 2008

Those who saw the object descending, claim that it was of a turquoise color.

"It was bright, bright enough that it illuminated the ground. It went behind a hill, and I waited to see if I could hear it crash because as big as it was, it was bound to make noise."

Costigan never heard the sound of the object crashing.

It flashed a number of colors including turquoise, blue and green.

Well, i've mentioned this encounter to a few people at work and got the typical brain-dead responses "what were you smoking?", "what were you smoking?" and..... "what were you smoking?".

Although i did find something interesting, one dude who currently lives here but had lived in a small farm town called Penshurst which is approx 30km south told me a story that took place about 12 years ago. Penshurst is at the base of basically just a large grass hill.

The story goes that one of his mates mums was awoken one night to the ground "rumbling" not like an earthquake but more like a deep vibration. She went outside to find a large black craft flying above the trademark hill, it apprently had one light and one light only which was that of a small triangle in the middle of it. She later rang one of her mates who lived about 5km down the road from where i currently am and whilst on the phone to her she started to experience the same "rumbling".

Supposedly this craft was sighted by numerous people. I asked my mate if he knew what shape it was (more specifically if it was a triangle), how quick it was travelling and if it made any sound but he wasnt sure.

Did you ask what color it was? I saw an orangish triangle in the 90's. Here's a sketch of the object in the actual location that I saw it.

He said it was black, or, blended into the night. It was night time so it'd be hard to know for sure but yeah supposedly it was black but noticeable.

I saw something that matches your description in 1999. I was driving home from work and was stuck in traffic about 5:30 pm. It was summer and still daylight. I sat there in the car and watched this blue oval thing fall from the sky. I rolled the window down because I knew it would make a loud sound when it hit the ground behind the treeline, but never heard anything. I started ruling possible causes out. As big as it appeared to be, I ruled out satellite debris. There weren't any flames or smoke from an entry into the atmosphere that I've witnessed from falling meteors either. No airplanes had broken apart. Even though it seemed to be falling straight down in the sky, I sensed that it was a controlled fall, although it was coming in fast. The color of blue was striking as well. I never mentioned it to anyone, and I hadn't thought about this for years until I read your post.

That reminds me of something I saw back in the early 80's that I had forgotten about. I lived in a third floor apartment with a balcony. One night I was out on the balcony watering some plants when I saw a large fireball that was maybe 1000 ft. or so above the building. It was neon green and very bright but didn't hurt my eyes. It was moving fast and disappeared over the horizon within ten seconds or so. It was seen by a lot of people and made the local news. The media people said it was probably a meteor or bolide. Maybe it was, but it certainly was different - especially the color.

Appreciate the replys. I'm still drowning in curiosity as to what this thing was. I'd even go as far to say whatever it was, it knew we were there and it wanted to be seen. Given that, there wasnt a single car on the trip home. They are the kind of roads that are only used by a few, we were probably the only car within a 15km radius at the time. It appearing so close, directly across from us and travelling in the same direction seems to hard to put down as mere "coincidence" and been in the right place at the right time for me.
