I thought I'd just go about my own lazy way of looking for patterns, and instead of jacking Ally's thread I thought I'd begin my own crazy journey utilizing the topics 1987 and UFO's plus Dr. J. Allen Hynek.
So here are some facts/fodder for what I'm calling UFO Related Degrees of Separation... contribute to the madness; scoff at my expense; have fun; do what you want with it; I don't care:

April 27, 1987 - Kurt Waldheim is declared an "undesirable alien" by the United States Department of Justice.

Strieber was apparently involved with the purported Harmonic Convergence geared toward late Summer 1987.
