We've invited Peter Davenport, director of the National UFO Reporting Center, to join us this week for a UFO update. He has lots to talk about, and this will be a good time to catch up.

So he writes, "One of the issues I would like to discuss is the wild proliferation of sightings of clusters of red, orange, and yellow fireballs. It appears to be the most important facet to the current status of Ufology, and I strongly suspect that the overwhelming majority of those reports do not involve so-called 'Chinese' lanterns.

He also wants to talk about plans for developing a UFO detection system using "passive" radar.

We'll be recording this episode on Tuesday, February 16, at noon Mountain time.

How do you tell genuine "fireballs" from chinese lanterns? Couldn't the latter travel at high speeds if they float high enough to get caught in an airstream that's not to be felt at ground level? Or seem to move erratically when caught in some air turbulence?

Do you think these fireballs are a new phenomenon?

Did you read "Wonders in the Sky" by Chris Aubeck an Jacques Vallee, which has observations of seemingly inexplicable light phenomena going back to ancient history?

What about the WW II foo fighters? Some descriptions seem to match yellow or reddish "fireballs". Do you think they might have been something else altogether?

Just orbs of energy, like plasma balls, or part of a larger, more physical craft?

Is there genuine footage of "fireballs" on the Internet? What do you think about Alison Kruse's material, who seems to record light phenomena regularly (but also thinks "they" might be camouflaging as normal aircraft)?

Why is it that most people seem to want to dismiss them as "just some lights in the distance"?

What's your take on the Hessdalen lights? Just natural phenomena, as even most UFO researchers seem to believe?

There seems to be little footage of lights or light formations behaving anomally. For example, if I listen to witnesses from Hessdalen, there are many reports of intelligent maoeuvers by or intereaction with the lights, but not much in terms of videos. Are researchers or witnesses keeping footage to themselves?

Would you consider a connection to light phenomena that (although smaller) are sometimes reported in haunting or poltergeist type cases?

From what I see online, a "passive" radar system is a Receiver System that is tuned to the frequency of existing radar transmitters, that today blanket the world. Great idea!!! As a former radar tech, I hope you will take a few moments to explain your passive radar system, and even get technical for a few minutes.

Questions:
Could you please give your estimations of actual anomalous events that occur each day, month and year, after weeding out all reports answered by mundane explanations?

Is the actual percentage of anomalous reports increasing or decreasing?

Can you give a rough breakdown of the types of events-sightings in 2015?

The purpose of data collection is usually to eventually extract information from the data-set. NURC has been around and collecting data since 1974 what if any information have you been able to extract?

How does the UFO field take advantage of the big data techniques and cheap computing power that are now available to turn UFO reports into meaningful information?

How has the nature of the reports NURC received changed since 1974?

A few more questions:

In light of the reports received, do you Peter, or does the NURC, have a best guestimation of "what" is generating these reports, for example, ETH, time travelers, ultraterrestrials, earthlights, etc. ? Do you have a ranking of what is most likely and what is least likely? If NURC does not have a guess, do you personally Peter?

Have there been many trace incidents in recent years?

Something mentioned during the Whitley Strieber interview: Do reports at the NURC ever include mention of close encounters with "ghosts" of deceased people known by the people reporting the incident?
