Understanding Higgs

Free episodes:

Shortest explanation I found to date.

A Higgs field permeates the universe. A good analogy is the water filling a lake.

The Higgs boson is the main component of an excited Higgs field (quantum) as H2O (2 atoms of hydrogen + 1 oxygen) is to water.

The Interaction between a Higgs boson and elementary particles will give the particles mass or not. Similar to different types of fish attaining different optimal speeds in the same body of water.

Exploiting this discovery should give us endless energy according to Bill Nye the science guy ;)

since we done gone found the god-particle doodad in 2012 end of days y2k etc..

I never could really get a handle on this concept myself but I like the water filling up a lake analogy because I understand that if it could be proved that this particle exists I guess it would also "prove" einstein's general relativity relating to how to explain gravity i.e. it's not unlike water being displaced by the introduction of a large mass.

But then Nye still thinks humans are creating catastrophic global warming which is now known to be a scam.

Plenty of serious scientists and researchers disagree with you. The fact that the Earth is getting hotter is indisputable. Whether or not we're causing it remains to be seen but I would guess that we are, at the very least, a contributing factor. The only scam is that carbon tax crap they're proposing, like that's going to fix anything.

As far as understanding the Higgs boson goes, I like this explanation better:

Imagine the universe like a party. Relatively unknown guests at the party can pass quickly through the room unnoticed; more popular guests will attract groups of people (the Higgs bosons) who will then slow their movement through the room.
The speed of particles moving through the Higgs field works much in the same way. Certain particles will attract larger clusters of Higgs bosons -- and the more Higgs bosons a particle attracts, the greater its mass will be.

Makes it much easier to understand the overall concept imo.

Excellent analogy. If we can develop technologies that render ships stealthy to bosons I wonder how fast they could go ? A massless ship could go as fast as a photon :)

Sadly, you get the sense that CERN are under a lot of pressure.
Scientists aren't immune from the economic pressures that we
are all under in the modern world. We want results and we want them
now, God (particle) dammit!.
